Although these little bastards do keep other pest populations at bay, I recently watched a documentary on insects; and there are 200 million insects to each human on earth. Makes me wonder, what would that number be without these insect equivalents to meth addicts? The documentary went on to say that if the insect kingdom ever got their shit together, we're all done.
Yeah, imagine them organized and working together, plotting and carrying out the death of mankind.

Sounds like the makings of a good movie. I think there was something like that, though I can't remember what it was called.
Starship Troopers
Yep, how could I forget that. One of my faves. Those were alien insects, though. And gigantic ones, at that.

We've lived in the woods for 35 years and wasp are part of the landscape here. We have 3 nest in our chicken coop. We clean the coop every day, most of the time within 1 ft of the nest. We move slowly and calmly while they fly in and out the entire time and never been stung.
That nest will be abandoned in the winter (Pittsburg) and they will not reuse it.
They built that nest where they feel secure but mostly near a food source. If anybody thinks knocking a single nest down is going to discourage or in any other way materially affect the local wasp population ...good luck with that.

All great points. And I am envious, my friend. My Gunks climbing days are in the rearview mirror but among the finest moments of my 20s. Wonderful, wonderful views from those crags.

But I digress from the OP. Here is a string about use of brake cleaner for wasps, including some drawbacks.

When I lived in the country we had wasps pretty regularly. I don’t mind them (or other critters) in the woods, but I do mind them on/in the house.

For the wasps, I read that they are territorial and will usually not go near another wasps nest, so I started leaving the nests up after spraying the wasps dead. It seemed to work about two years before another nest would get started close to the original one. I sprayed with that stuff you can get at HD or Lowes with the 20 foot spray, and when they start flying I try to hit every one of them so they don’t go off and homestead somewhere else on my house. Even the highest nests (30 feet up, so used a tall ladder to spray, checking wind before) were sending agents down to sting us so all had to go. Spray early in the morning (coolest time of day) so they are less active, and again, stay upwind so it doesn’t rain down in your face.

We also had a couple of full wall cavities of bees (not the carpenters) which we discovered when water damage forced us to open the walls up. The demo crew screamed like schoolgirls and I went in with my spray and killed them all. No honey so maybe they were hornets, no autopsies or dental record checking was done to ascertain identity. Then I plugged the holes which were very small that they had used to get in.

Man, so many "What do I do with these hornets" threads popping up! As chance would have it, I too have a hornet nest in my rock wall that i'm looking to nuke. I have a buddy who is a professional exterminator. Unfortunately he lives 200 miles away so he cant help me in person. Anyway, I called him for advice and he gave me the name of the industrial product he uses. I googled it and wouldn't you know it, there's a site on the internet that will sell it to us amateur dip-shits with no training, no certifications, no PPEs. God Bless America!

Here's the shit I ordered. it will be here in a couple days: https://www.domyown.com/delta-dust-i...cide-p-44.html

I've got a wasp nest hanging directly over where I park my truck. I'm not sure how long it's been there, I just noticed it last week. I can stand right under it and they don't seem the least bit bothered. I don't have any plans to get rid of it either, unless it gets too heavy and hangs low enough that I hit it with the truck. If that happens it will be war.

How you gonna get close enough to get dust in that little hole without getting a billion stings ?

Your buddy is setting you up to fail. Get some 20 foot jet spray.

Long pole and knock it down then stay inside for a bit.

The problem with the sprays is that it wont reach the core of the hive back in the rock wall and it only kills the hornets that you actually spray. The rest it just pisses off. I've been spraying the Hell out of the hole in the rock wall where they come out for about 2 weeks and it's had zero impact other than killing the few dozen that happened to be in its path when I sprayed.

He told me the key is to wear white. The bastards will go after you if you wear dark colors. I've got a white hooded tyvec suit that I used when I was crawling around the attic removing itchy rockwool loose fill insulation. Plan is to hit them late evening when they are not active. Blast it in here with a long reach duster and GTFO. https://www.domyown.com/long-shot-pu...r-p-11745.html
