Lasers are not more efficient than LED. That's a big reason why laser weapons are difficult to make- most of the energy goes to waste heat.

Why are people worried about laser detectors? The headlights aren't UV. The light coming out of the front of the car isn't even a laser- it's, basically, flourescent...just with a different energy source for exciting the phosphers. Good thing, too. Why would you want wide angle headlight replaced by a little blue dot somewhere out in front of you?

Makes sense, I think more low end cars are going to start including Xenons and luxury brand makers need a better lighting option for their higher end models. Because what's the big deal about Xenons if a Kia has them too?

Have they even perfected LED low beams? Last I heard, they had cooling issues (needs a fan to cool it down).

"system that automatically illuminates pedestrians in good time" - I was reading random snips and read this as "eliminates pedestrians in good time". Good idea for an aftermarket upgrade of lasers :-)

The seems like some major greenwash bs. Someone please tell me how much fuel will this save. I have seen no difference in mpg with the lights on or off. Yeah maybe a few barrels of oil over the entire fleet. But if it costs more then to me it's a gimmic

Pssst. Want a good deal on a German luxury car? Then go shopping in the final few months of this year, because there will be deals aplenty.

That is the message from the managing director of BMW Australia, Phil Horton, as he prepares for a luxury-car sales battle he predicts will ''go down to the wire''.

Snip....

For its part, BMW has gained support in its battle from the very top of the company. The global sales and marketing boss for BMW, Ian Robertson, has come good on a promise to secure extra volume of the popular new second-generation X3.

Not only will extra X3s flow from BMW's South Carolina factory but so will a price-leader version powered by a new 135kW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

The X3 xDrive 20i will be equipped at the same level as the turbo-diesel X3 xDrive 20d (from $62,200 plus on-road and dealer costs) but will be about $2000 cheaper when it arrives in December.

So the new BMW i8 will have laser headlights...

Then modders will come out with made in China aftermarket laser angel eye headlights for tuner cars.

BMW comes up with Gamma radiation headlights.

Then modders...

Yep, instead of using a xenon tube its a laser.

Are they using a lens to disburse the light? It seems they are.

So instead if a bowl to reflect the light, its "mirrors".

Edit: Oh crap...this is from 2011...my bad.
