Hmm, at the time the A4 and the IS350 were not offered in stick, so I don't know. I may have just waited around for a while. Or I might have gotten the DSG A3, as much as I didn't want to give up my stick, my knee hit the dash when i shifted it during the test drive.

Audi A3. I almost got one even with the 3-series as an option.
Edit: Actually as much as I like the A3 I could not bring myself to purchase one on the sheer principle of how shitty their standard equipment and options packages are. |

Probably an A3 2.0T quattro with DSG and Sport Package.
Its compact, the engine packs lots of torque for a 4-cylinder, and the DSG is freakin' awesome. My only problem is that its so pricey new but can't hold a candle in resale value to the BMW. If it did, this little car would be a great value.

If the BMW did not 'invent' the sport sedan segment, someone else would have created it. But who knows if it would be slightly different in terms of it's characteristics.
If the 3 series did not exist, I'd get a 1 series. If it's not available, then a 5 series. It just has to be a BMW at least when considering with 'practicality' in mind! |

Acura - I really like the agressive look of the car and especially the rear for some reason.
A4 - I like the new body as well and liked earlier Audi interiors..
