Ah crap, I got no discipline when it comes to snacks. I still pig out on chips, but luckily my sweet tooth is dying. I don't worry about my wt though, still good/avg, but I feel my heart is weaker or clogging up due to my fatty food choices. HELP ME, HELP ME LOL.

I wanna say I'd eat carrot and celery sticks but I'd get bored outta my mind. I can take some nut mixes. I don't consider fruit 'snacks'…cmon lmao.

The trick is moderation rather than outright deprivation. Even when I was doing physique shows, I regularly ate a whole pizza every Friday……but I moderated my food intake the other days of the week (…the whole, measure/portion size thing). Deprivation is a recipe for failure.

Yeah! I've done two shows in the past. It taught me a lot about my body, how it builds muscle, how it burns fat, what my strength limits are without using steroids, etc.

What type of cardio do you normally tend to do?

Re cardio, I watch some aerobics routine on YT, and stationary bike and ski machine. Haven't done it w any consistency, so need to get off my butt.

There are many degrees to the term "healthy" and depending on how far you want to go, it's a rather lengthy discussion. The best way to determine if something is healthy is to ascertain what effect the snack will have on your microbiota. Basically, what does the food do to your GI bacteria? Does it increase pro-inflammatory cytokines like high levels of IL-6 or does it increase anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10.

As an example, celery was mentioned above. Celery is a low calorie snack that many consider a "healthy" food. It does contain flavonoids, fiber, beta carotene, and some ascorbic acid so it does have healthy components to it. Did you know it is one of the more pesticide laden foods we can eat? A vast majority of celery that is not organically grown has more than one pesticide residue in it. That won't help your GI bacteria very much and can make some people less healthy.

Sausage was mentioned in one of the posts. I think it's safe to say that it is a very inflammatory food and does not help your GI bacterial ratios. I'm not going down the processed meat road in this thread.

Seeds in general can be good snacks as long as they aren't treated with oils and preservatives and many are.

Here is a rule of thumb. The more fiber a product contains, the better it is for you. Of course there are outliers, but for younger people, this rule is often true.

As we age, our nutritional requirements change. What we need to eat at 20 years old isn't the same as what we need to eat at 80. Our GI bacterial ratios determine what we need to eat and they gradually change throughout our lifetime because of a poor diet. And that includes me and all the other healthy eaters on this board.

I'm not a diabetic.
When I snack I tend to eat the entire bag/s or the whole box. When I eat a lot of table sugar or oily salty food my skin starts to itch. Could be totally my imagination.

Does anyone get the same itching ?

The issue is the ingredients - they feel good for your mental health because they numb you out. There is nothing wrong with the occasional chips and m&m's, I make it a point to enjoy some while I'm on vacation. But this thread was intended to get ideas about snacks that lean toward healthy for your body. The mind/body connection/gut health isn't talked about as much as it could be.

As already pointed out - those snacks are designed to be addictive and rarely are enjoyed only on occasion.

Anyway, I've bought like 10 big bags of trail mix since starting this thread, they have various nuts and raisins, and m&m's. Certainly not the healthiest - but definitely awesome

What is this group's thinking on cheese? I like it, eat it, and consider it in the "healthy" category. It's a good source of protein and fat.

Cheese for me includes hard cheese like parmesan, also feta and gruyere. Gruyere and parmesan (or asiago or romano) are in my snack routine.

Feta and bleu are also great but I usually have those with salads.

I'm not a big fan of snack-packaged cheese like string cheese or cubed cheddar. Maybe it's an unfair bias.

Cheese sort of falls under the category of how your individual body responds to it and what cheese you're referring to. Hard cheese generally yes, soft, generally no.

A nice hard cheese melted over an apple slice over some quality flatbread/cracker = awesome.

Pita chips or triscuits and hummus, trail mix, or tortilla chips + chunky salsa are some of my favorites... I haven't seen hummus mentioned yet in the thread so I'm curious what some of the more knowledgeable folks think about it as a healthy snack -- generally avoiding sabra.

Hummus is OK in my book. Fairly calorie dense, but good quality.

Chickpeas
Tahini (sesame paste)
EVOO
Water
Salt
Lemon juice
Garlic

All good ingredients.

I've been making organic; banana, peanut butter and plain yogurt smoothies.
After blending place in the freezer until is becomes like a Wendy's Frosty.
