Cool bike. It is something I have not thought about. Different is good. Same is also good. Quiet is good. Engine sounds are also good. Riding is good. Being able to afford these toys are good. All good!

I'm pretty sure BMWs are one of the most sound insulated brands of cars on the road. If outside noise was so crucial you would think BMW would have a considerably higher accident rate then other manufacturers. Yet...

Rode one of my electric bicycles at the park on the trails today. Good ride. Haven't been using the BMW a lot. The Zero is still running great. One thing I've noticed is it stretches the chain more slowly than a normal ICE bike, which is convenient. That's cuz 1st gear on a petrol bike has a bunch more torque on the chain than a single speed electric even with the ferocious powerband, and clutch hammering isn't nice either.

Electric motorcycles are inevitable. I've seen prior incarnations of e-bike racing at MotoGP races and it's pretty exciting... though strangely quiet... and there were lots of bikes that couldn't finish seven laps at Laguna Seca due to the steep elevation change.

Unfortunately, all of the bikes for the new MotoE series were destroyed when a charger, like the one above, malfunctioned during testing at Jerez earlier this year. They are scrambling to rebuild so there will be bikes to race this season.

My current bike turns 20 this year....

If I get something new, my eye is on the Indian FTR 1200. I've been waiting 30 years for Harley (or Indian) to release a flat track replica.

I'm not sure why we have to electrify everything.

That is an old, tired and invalid argument. Specifically for loud motorcycles. Deaf people can drive, people listen to music loudly, wear ear phones, etc. And location detection is not very accurate.

I hear these guys...usually after they pass me. If you want loud pipes to be cool knock yourself out.

Sigh. I'm too old to worry about being cool.

Edit:

Anyone nearly run over on a sidewalk by an eScooter (that should be on the actual road anyway) knows noise matters. I'm not saying that to advocate for loud straight pipes. I'm saying that because in this day and age of inattentive (or attention-diverted) vehicle operators that spans nearly all types of wheeled this-and-that, noise is one of the few things that keeps you and others from getting hurt. I pay attention, and I still nearly get run over, all the time.

These will become more mainstream. I absolutely loved my I3. Those who bash electric cars and bikes need to spend the time and test drive one. Sure they are not for everyone or every trip.

Just like I wouldn't use my Ram 1500 to tow 12000lbs or take it on a cross country trip. Likewise I wouldn't try to fit 10 sheets of OSB in the M4.

The only factor that keeps me from buying a electric street bike is the number of texting drivers on the roads. Simply not worth the risks.

I am very tempted at the electric assist mtn bikes. 3-4" fat tires with electric power assist for up hill speeds.

Good to see you in the thread, overlook. I also make throttle-controlled, high powered e-bicycles as a hobby and they are crazy fun on the trails. Pedal-assist are fun too, but they usually have only a few hundred watts of power.

This is a risk on any type of street bike, is it not?

I'm too logical to buy any motor vehicle powered by batteries. These are purchases driven by emotion; and I don't feel any passion for them at all.

Congrats on the bike.
If it makes you happy, that's most important factor when buying bike.
I was considering buying electric bike in 2016,but simply people are so retarded and blind in traffic, plus 70% of them are on the phone.
Bought Yamaha FJ-09, my 1st choice was S1000XR, but it was 3-4 month order.
2 weeks after M4 exhaust arrived, for me one of most important factor to be noticed by others in traffic.
With electric bike there is no sound,so you're hardly noticed by others.
For you driving off road probably no big deal.
