Normally and engine can run a couple of minutes without water (overheating) without extreme damage done to the engine. Now to the point the engine seems to have seized and/or warped the head and damaged the block, that means he was driving with the water temp thru the roof for quite a while.

Ok... I went through a few pages of that thread and it appears that your friend has not yet contacted BBB. I think BBB is the first resort (which would likely fail), next step would be a lawyer who agrees to get paid only if you win.
