It is a bummer but certainly not the end of the world. A lot of people fail the PMP test the first time. Study more, take the practice tests several times, and simply invest time into it until you have it nailed. Then take the test again. I think its worth having a PMP certification if you are in the project management field. It will open many doors for you. If you are involved in software or systems development, you should also consider Agile training and become a certified scrum master. Much more relevant (to me) for software project and the test is way easier. But, get the PMP too. Your resume will be better off for it. Good luck! |

As - after going through the boot camp back in May - getting audited by PMI that took until July - then getting screwed with a shitty project when a PM "quit"...I was finally able to take the test today.
Spent about a month and a half - weekends and all - and part of my vacation to Panama studying. Hit hard core this last week, about 16 hours per day Thursday through the weekend, Monday and Tuesday. Got about 3 hours sleep last night. But - did it. I'm done. Fully Certified PiMP, I can slap my hoes I think if it were graded, I probably would have had a D- But passing is passing. Thank god that shit's over, I don't wish it on anyone.

^ congrats man on the victory .
i failed the exam twice now and am super anxious on this last attempt as i will have to wait one year and re-submit application to be able to take new pmbok 6 version. studying my ass off write now until my exam late next month which is the deadline before new vision. all i want is to pass, not shooting for the stars . worst case scenario, i will take the capm as i am avging 80-85% on the practice tests. do you have any tips/tools on study guides, charts, etc?

I got Ritas prep guide...then bought the audio cd with it, played the cd while I read it for better comprehension. Made it much better to go through the 600 pages and understand it.
Other than that, the boot camp I did (PMA) had their course online...so I reviewed with that and did 3 full length timed tests. Main part is knowing what section you're in by the question...and it may change in the last sentence. Then...took the time to write down all the processes in order that they happen [initiating, planning, executing, etc]...you start to see patterns with the inputs and outputs that make it easier to grasp. Took 5 hours to do though... If you're getting 80 to 85 on tests, I would think you could pass? Not sure how your practice tests line up with the real thing...I had no equations in my test. Kinda pissed me off, as it would have been a few easy points. Good luck on your next one...I'm rooting for ya. Last edited by ShopVac; 02-28-2018 at 05:10 PM.. |

rita is the book i am using now as well but my book didn't come with an audio cd, will look into that.
the first exam i had like 20 formula questions and the second one 0 as well. the 80-85% practice exams is for the capm which is a level down from pmp, this will be my backup if i were to fail the pmp a third final time; better than nothing for all this time studying. ugh... few more weeks until my big day, will update once done

The PMP is a joke certification for a joke job. I interviewed someone today and saw the PMP and viewed it as a negative.
You also should have passed the test without studying. |

^its more along the lines of a modern MBA imho... yes its on your resume but honestly doesn't mean you can do shit. I am qualified to take the test solely based on the fact that I hve enough MS Project usage.

Congrats on the pass. Two people in my office just took it and passed as well. They said they studied their asses off for about a month before they took it.
I was somewhat considering it but right now I'm not doing PM work. I was in the past when I was considering it more. Just recently took and earned my PE in mechanical so I need a break from tests for a little while.

MBA is far more valuable than an online certification, lol. They aren’t on the same planet.

First exam was all process related and very few earned value related questions. Second exam, I used up all my scratch paper since I had probably 20+ earned value questions. To the guy that says a PM that doesnt know the material can pass the exam? No chance as PMI has a very specific methodology and terminology.

That might be your problem. Always shoot for the stars and hope for a pass.
And sorry ShopVac - I have to agree with BayMoWe.... PMs are greatly overrated for 90% of the stuff they try and do. The only thing they are good for in my area is bothering other people for results so I don't have to.

But whatever, see it how you like. PMP test is a piece if cake, I'm sure you'd pass with no issues if needed. We should all be so lucky

It's easier to be a shitty engineer than a shitty PMP. Engineering is a lot harder, so you'll naturally have people that don't excel. Project management takes no technical skills and is a simple job. Not saying it's unnecessary.
