On my mountain bike I have fairly expensive aluminum flats called Vaults by a brand called DMR.

Great flat pedals can be found in a nylon composite material for pretty cheap if not looking to spend too much. Most come in a wide variety of colors too. All retail around $50 but sales can definitely be found. A few:
-Raceface Chester Pedals
-One Up composite pedals
-Deity Deftrap

Heres a pic of my new bike (two weeks old) next to my car prior to my last singletrack ride. I have been wanting toi get into MTB for a bit , finally pulled the trigger on a Trek Marlin 4 - seemed to be a good entry level bike with decent equipment and specs. I must say, riding a "nice " bike that fits you properly is a whole diff game than a bike off the shelf at walmart!! Looking forward to putting some miles in this year!

I can not ride a bike if my shoes are not attached to the pedals, so I run Crank Brothers Egg Beaters (I am an old school MTBr though). I tried flats and we did not get along.

im a roadie, but am looking for something that will take me on gravel trails and dirt roads. i dont want a mountain bike. any recommendations? so far ive looked into trek dual sport, cannondale CX, canyon trail lite.

Depends what type of ride you want. Specialized has the new diverge out for 2021 that has a decent spec starting at $1600. They have the diverge evo being released as a flat bar bike with the future shock 2.0. A 20mm suspension that suspends the rider via the bars, not the whole bike.

I believe that Salsa makes great adventure type bikes as well.

Really just depends on your budget

What is your budget? I have a 9 year old Cannondale Trail, the model today runs around $1,000. My wife and I ride approx 20 miles per week on paved rural roads in Indiana, it's a great bike. It also handles trails just fine. The tires are a bit wide for road use, but are nice on trails and gravel. I don't consider it a hardcore mountain bike. The hydraulic disk brake system is one of my favorite features.

Awesome thanks that helps. I’ll look into both. My goal would be $1000. My road bike is the sinkhole 😂

My gut tells me that a hard tail would fit the bill well, knowing I don’t care about road speed with it.

$1000 is my goal. The trail is a mountain bike yes? Any issues on the road with it? Noise? Too slow? Also how much trail can it handle? Dirt roads? Our trails in CT are mixed gravel and dirt sections and I’d like something the misses (this is a dual purchase) will be confident on. Thanks man!

Yes, the Trail is a mountain bike. No issues on the road, it is great. No noise other than normal bike riding (good) noise. Not too slow. It handles any trail I would want to ride on, from fine crushed stone to moderate slope/rock/roots. I lived in CT (Stonington) for a year and am familiar with roads in central and eastern CT. No issue in my view.

Does dual purchase mean you are buying two bikes of the same model, or one bike shared between the two of you? Sharing a bike seems challenging because of body size difference. My wife and I bought Cannondales at the same time, and she got the Quick and I got the Trail. Both of us are satisfied. The Quick is a road bike without dropped handlebars. Two weeks ago I gave my daughter a Quick CX, which is a female model of the Trail. The Quick CX has a front shock fork, the Quick has a solid front fork.

A possible combination for you and your wife is either two Trails, or a Trail for you and a Quick CX for her. Both of you would then have a bike with front shocks and disk brakes.

it would be two bikes. i got her a road bike, she grew out of it, then we upgraded. then, she decided she doesnt like it. so now, i want to see if she will be comfy on an SUV

i like the idea of giving her something'faster' than what i would have, but my goal is stability over anything else
