I think Will Smith is bipolar and he has clearly had family issues w his wife.

I think the major concern here is a double standard where he was completely let off the hook.

Is the slap real? I dunno. I don't think it was pre planned but hollering at Chris Rock was real, Chris' reaction to that shouting was real I mean why would Will not do the whole GOT 'CHA! thing during his acceptance speech if it wasn't? Added publicty?? Nah! 'fessin up wouldn't have harmed the publicity this has already gathered imo.

I'm surprised people think this is fake. The reactions after the slap were way too real. Chris Rock being left speechless and in an awkward state was real... Will Smith's speech where he apologized to everyone EXCEPT Chris Rock was very real. Even if you could argue that Will Smith is a great actor... Chris Rock isn't really known for his acting skills. So that shocked expression and speechless moment for him was definitely not fake.

Guess looking it up it was the GI Jane one that did it, I dont really follow (or even give a shit) about these people so I didnt get it. But apparently his wife has really bad alopecia and is losing her hair. Knowing that the joke is pretty damn cold.

He shouldn't have hit him but going up to him an telling him he is a piece of shit for joking about his wifes medical condition to her face on national TV would have been appropriate.

I like Rock, but he’s had this coming for a long time. Obviously dumb of Smith to do it this way, but we all make mistakes, sometimes really bad ones. He’ll say his sorry’s, go to treatment and be back at the Oscars coming out on stage with Rock saying we made up blah blah blah. At least they were finally interesting once for a brief moment, still not watching.

Chris Rock was in the last season of Fargo. He can act. Will Smith can act. Will Smith’s wife can act. It’s what they all do. Presumably there is security at the event to stop people from just walking on stage when they aren’t supposed to be there, regardless of who they are.

Whole thing has a Jussie vibe to it. Manufacture an incident to attract attention to the Oscars or maybe her condition. Now it’s the topic of the week. But if he really was concerned about comedians joking about his wife, this would be the last thing he’d do. Now, every comedian around will be joking about him and her.

Dunno, all speculation, if it was a gag then as others have said, both did amazing acting jobs during and after the incident.

I think it's fake, used to drum up ratings for next year's Oscars and future awards shows. It's no secret the public is less and less interested in, and most likely resentful of watching celebrities celebrate themselves at a time of record inflation, war and so forth. Nothing like a little manufactured drama to keep the masses interested.

Interesting clip here during the intermission, immediately after the slap. Smith being consoled by Denzel Washington and Tylor Perry, then appears to wipe tears from his eye upon return to his seat. it really is shaping up to be the real deal, IMO.

Will Smith is a pussy. There's no true malice that comedians have towards someone when they talk shit. Unless you heckle them or steal their shit etc. That's what they do. Talk shit to get laughs. That's their job. Granted, this was during a awards ceremony vs paying to see Rock perform a set. But you can't react that way. Just continue on with your life, a life many would dream of having. I feel like these awards shows need to have the guests sign a disclaimer when a comedian is hosting.
