The track or a private road is better than the highway where there are still others sharing the road with you.

Am I seeing the rear of the VW on the complete opposite side of the road (also facing the wrong way)?

Its EGO... it all comes down to Ego. I know first hand because I have been stupid in the past as well. You are right though, LA does have a lot of people who DGAF. The worst are the extremes, the poor areas and rich areas. Both DGAF for different reasons.

To be honest, it's also the cars now. When I was younger it took some serious time and money to have a FI car with lots of HP. Now, these same lower tier cars are coming off the lot with gobs of HP. So you have these young drivers with lots of Ego, lots of power, and a poorly developed prefrontal cortex. Unfortunately it's bound to happen.

The thing unique to LA is there's no guarantee the person driving an expensive car has any money, education, or class. The culture here is of YOLO and showing off. People sharing an apartment with three others yet driving an M4 type of stuff. And even a lot of the people with money are not necessarily educated or have any class, this is Hollywood after all.

Something about LA draws me, there's a lot of redeeming qualities. But I could totally see myself settling down in Orange County for a reason.

This was pretty recent as well. The community was worried that they kid's dad was going to have it swept under the rug because of his wealth. I'm glad he admitted to manslaughter.

YES!! OC > LA everyday! The traffic is better (during non rush hour times), the buildings are lower, the beaches are cleaner. It's just a little more laid back.

Lol as someone from Orange County, there's plenty of that shit here too! But I agree, LA is a different flavor of crazy.

House arrest sounds like a pretty kush sentence given that they probably live in a huge luxurious house. That kid should be required to attend the funeral and watch all of her family members grieve and look at him in disgust.

I hope he gets more than just house arrest. Another thing to add to the story is that the girl he killed just graduated from college.

i just took a vacation to LA. I'm not sure how its even possible to street race there. There is traffic everywhere, even at night. I had a TTRS and was maybe able to hit redline a handful of times. even on the drive to malibu you can't really push it.

We used to street race in industrial areas on the outskirts of LA back in the late 90's. That was the inspiration for Fast And Furious (the original article was about a racer in NYC, but the film was inspired by and took place in LA). It was a combination of rebelliousness and love for fast cars.

Nowadays it's isolated incidents at stop lights or outright takeovers of intersections and streets for lame-ass sideshows.

People also enjoy Tōge in the canyons (CA2, SGR, Mulholland etc) but that comes with its own risks.

Personally, there's too many local tracks to choose from to risk it on the street.

Yeah lot of craziness on the 55 and 5. But overall it is more calm and civilized, especially south of the 55.

Most of the races happen at night when the freeways and streets are clear. These are still super dangerous, but not as bad. The other type of street racing is the Ego fueled "I gotta get to the light faster than you", "my car is faster", "I'm a better driver" types. Those are the people who are weaving through traffic and cutting people off.

There was a strip of road leading to Costco in S. London that had regular street racers and bikers of all sorts. Once a car went out of control and into the crowd injuring people then when a biker was killed doing a wheelie the council put speed humps along the whole strip.

Unfortunately, they are becoming a rare breed. Irwindale is the most recent one to go.

There are several tracks at Willow Springs. Auto Club Speedway and Adams Motorsports Club is an hour away. Buttonwillow, Thermal Club, and Chuckwalla are 3 hours away.

I haven't been to Irwindale in years. Is it closing down?

A theory I've often pondered is places with more traffic are actually more susceptible to street racing attempts - something about feeling stuck in traffic creating an explosive reaction.

It's just unfortunate when people get injured in life altering ways and/or die. What's that line from Unforgiven - when you kill a man, you take away everything he has and will ever be or something?
