One of my tips is crispy clean, the other is covered in carbon buildup as you can see from the pics. The one that is clean does have the actuator valve that the 335i has, but it does not open the flap even if I pinch it or pull the plug. What gives?

Good thinking.
It would get rid of anything on the outside of the tips, but I don't think it would do much good for the carbon around the "inside" ring on the muffler. I need some sort of solution for that such as a quick touch with paint thinner or nail polish remover and wash it off right away so it does not sink in too deep and damage the chrome finish.
