More often than not, I wonder, what was BMW thinking?
2025 BMW M5 Has Up To 25 Miles Of Electric Range And A Big Weight Problem Despite being more powerful than before, the first-ever plug-in hybrid BMW M5 is slower to 60 mph than its predecessor. Coming to the United States later this year, the brand-new German uber-sedan promises an “unfiltered performance experience,” but we can’t help but notice that even with all the weight savings mentioned in the official press release–like a plastic oil pan, among other things–the 2025 M5 is still a whopping 1,000 pounds heavier than the previous generation. Tipping the scales at a generous 5,390 pounds, the seventh-gen BMW M5 has a total system output of 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. This makes it 117 hp more powerful and 185 lb-ft more torquey than its predecessor but despite this, the zero to 60 miles per hour time is 3.4 seconds, two-tenths of a second slower than the old one. Moving on to more electrifying stuff, that 14.8-kWh battery pack bolted into the floor provides up to 25 miles of all-electric range and can be topped up using a Level 2 charger at a rate of up to 7.4 kW, according to BMW. It can also be charged while driving using the eControl driving mode. Meanwhile, the car defaults to the Hybrid mode every time you start it, giving access to the full system output. Switching to Comfort mode instructs the PHEV system to call on the electric motor more often, while the Electric mode switches off the V-8 completely, as long as there’s enough juice in the battery to propel the car. The 2025 BMW M5 will start at $120,675 (including destination) in the United States. I remember when I first saw the G82 M4 in person. It wasn't what I expected at all. I'm one of the people that never had a problem with the grille, but, when I saw it, in person, it was a completely different feeling. The body lines are just outstanding.

A performance M car weighing in at 1/4 ton plus is at best pathetic. Put that turkey on some UTQG rated tires around 200 A A's and you can measure tire life with a egg timer.
Shocked but I'm no fan of the M3 snout but I could over look that if it was on a 3 or M3 Estate. I can't justify the M5 estate's price and I suspect it will tip the scales in excess of the sedans 5,300 pounds |

BMW Defends The New M5 Hybrid’s Massive Weight Penalty June 28, 2024 When technical specifications of the new M5 leaked in mid-February, the curb weight left enthusiasts worried. BMW confirmed our worst fears when it unveiled the G90 earlier this week. Heavier than even the fully electric i5 M60, the seventh-gen sports sedan tips the scales at 5,390 pounds (2,445 kilograms) in the US and 5,368 lbs (2,435 kg) in Europe. Why is it so heavy? Although the car is larger than its predecessor, the weight penalty is primarily caused by the adoption of a plug-in hybrid setup. In an interview with Top Gear magazine, the BMW M boss said the electric bits have added about 400 kilograms (882 pounds) of fat. Mind you, the new M5 has actually put on 474 kg (1,045 pounds) if we’re comparing the US-spec G90 to the F90 before it. Frank van Meel explains why they went with a plug-in hybrid setup instead of a regular hybrid with a smaller battery that would’ve been lighter. Expect the upcoming M5 Touring to have an identical powertrain, but possibly even more weight. Wagons tend to be slightly heavier than the sedans they’re based upon. For example, an M3 Competition xDrive Sedan weighs 1,780 kg (3,924 lbs) in Europe whereas the M3 Touring is 1,865 kg (4,111 lbs). Can someone explain to me the need for a carbon fiber roof on the new M5?
Seems ridiculous to even offer “weight reducing” add ons to such a hog. It’s like a hidden camera show…can BMW get some clown to pay extra for the weight saving carbon roof…then the execs in Munich laugh their fannies off about scamming another sorry soul. |
