That's I like that style because it looks modern, somewhat unique but still classy and timeless.

I spent 5500 8 years ago. No idea what that would equate to currently. She got a 1.13 princess. Hell, I can't remember. Why worry about the dollar amount? If it gleams, is good quality etc., she'll love it (i hope).
I felt a bit of pressure (my own problem really) as her mom has a 5+ ct stone. What I've learned is- be your own man. I've got very little else to give advise on except to get a good contractor when you do home renovation. |

you can generally choose between round or princess (square cut).
prices are influenced by clarity and color of the diamond. And of course the size. Anything from 0.4-0.9 would rang between 2k - 8k Canadian. If your looking at a carat + then generally to speak, 9k + (up to like 14k). |

Sometimes her finger size changes cuz she's been on a good diet. Also if you think or remember what she said, you can pick up some hints on that too...just like my gf hates yellow gold. She likes white gold or platinum.

Seems its the jewelry stores that tell you you ought to be spending 2 months salary on a ring. Minor conflict of interest there!
I spent around $4-5K 8 years ago as well and she loved it. |

Just find out what shape she likes. Then check out bluenile.com. That's where I got my wife her ring. The website explains the 4 c's to you in great detail as well so you know what all the color and clarity and shit like that means as well.

Buy what you can afford and hope she loves you not your pocketbook. I bought my wife's ring when things were financially very different for us. Since that time, life has been very good to us and I upgraded her diamond to something better (ok, more bling-bling) last year.
The point is don't go deep into debt for the thing. That's DeBeers marketing/advertising at work creating peer pressure to give you the sense that to show your love, you need to spend mucho cash. Pure BS imo. If she's worth marrying, she won't give a hoot if you give her a curtain ring. It's what it represents that counts.

First off, we're smarter than this. We see that DeBeers is just a corporation that has made buying a diamond engagement right a big thing through marketing. I agree, shower curtain ring should be fine if she loves you.
Unfortunately, not everyone is as slick, and the gf wants the diamond. For the first engagement ring, get the biggest you can afford. Find out what shape of stone she wants, at a minimum. Pick a price, then go to bluenile and find a stone in that price, at a relatively low quality - with a naked eye you can't tell if there are minor inclusions, etc. Also, if your gf doesn't know that diamonds shouldn't be really yellow, you can save money there too. (I was too stupid to do these things - I gave my wife a small, perfect stone.) Now take that info into 3 different local jewelers and see what price they can give you. Use the opportunity to look at as many stones as you can personally, with and without the stereoscope/microscope. It's a learning opportunity. After 10 years of marriage, my wife made her engagement stone into a necklace, and I picked her out a new stone, about 4 times the price of the original, not a perfect stone. She picked out the setting, and everyone was happy. BTW, I used student loans to by the first stone. |

Hmm well it definitely depends on the girl because I don't want a large stone and I can tell the difference in quality. I want mine to be crystal clear, almost blue but I could care less how big it is.

when i was shopping for a ring, i found that tiffany's is a lot more expensive. for the same carat weight, you can get a much better diamond (better cut, color, and clarity) for the same price. my 14K ring would've cost 18-20K at tiffany's.
