I grabbed a few bottles at Costco. The Liquor store manager at my Costco knows someone at Buffalo Trace and gets limited amount of bottles every now and then. Only one bottle per card member, so I have my wife and parents buy a bottle too.

It's gonna be a Scotch kind of evening...

I also wanted to mention that of all spirits one can drink, Scotch is affected more by the addition of ice or water. The flavor profile can change tremendously.

When someone says "Scotch is smokey" I use Glenmorangie 10yo as the way to dispel that myth. A great scotch for newbs along with experienced whisky people.

The Quinta Ruban is even better and still a great value.

My wife has a friend whose husband is such a Scotch aficionado that they actually traveled to Scotland just to drink (mostly). He keeps plying me with the stuff when go to visit, pulling out 3 or 4 bottles and rambling on about their various qualities. Then he asks me which one I want. I just sit there for a minute, then I say "you choose" and he gives me a glass of one of them. Then I take about an hour to drink it.

I. Do. Not. Like. Scotch.

I generally do NOT like Scotch as it is far too smokey for my tastes. With ice this is doable.
However...JW Blue is the exception for me.

You just posted a bottle of Glenmorangie above - is that also an exception? Are all highland scotches an exception? When you say scotch are you only talking about Islay since you think they are smokey?

Scotch definitely is not the liquor that changes "the most" with water or ice, a lot of American whiskeys open up just as much if not more.

And yes. The Glenmorangie I have is doable, as I already stated.

There is no secret of my preference for Rums. Which should tell you all you need to know about my palate. With Cognac running a close second.
