Yeah, GCI carries Carbon-X but he's been out for a while as well. Oh well.

I just mowed a little lower in the backyard (2.5") since I'll drop some top soil, seed, and throw down a starter fert and won't be able to mow for a bit. Was thinking of putting down RGS as well prior to the seeds and fert. I cut the front to 3" and will put down RGS tomorrow. If the Hyr-Brix comes in, I'll put that down. Otherwise, I might just try that GreenYard stuff as a final (well...only) pre-summer feed.

The Green Yard...cause I like how it also has micro nutrients. I know Pete has his own Fert he's been developing but never took the time to really look into it. i'll have to check it out tho. Allyn Hayne just replied to my comment and it looks like he'll have more CarbonX coming as I made a statement about what's the point in selling a product if you're always gonna be out? I called CarbonX Milorganite Jr lol. not sure if he liked that. I would definitely get the RGS down and Humic12 before Summer gets here that way your grass will develop a better tolerance for heat and drought just in case you don't run your irrigation. with the RGS the roots will grow deeper where it can get more moisture below. my lawn did really well last year with both RGS and Humic12. let me know how that Hyr-Brix works for you

I know SoCal living. Lived in San Diego my whole life except the last 7 years since being here in OH. But my house in Temecula had such a small lawn you could probably mow it with a pair of scissors lol that's how small the lawns were

Yeah, it got a lot of hype and interest going as a result but seemed to only be available in small quantities. Similar to Milo but compressed into a shorter time span.

Since it is a little bit rainy today, I was going to put down RGS in the front and back (it'd have to be watered in anyways). it looks like the Hyr-Brix should get delivered this morning so I'll put it down in the front yard after the RGS.

Should I also put the Humic down now as well (front and back)? I figured the RGS/Humic applications would be spread out.

I've got 6cu yds of top soil/compost mix coming later today. That'll be my fun in the backyard later today/tomorrow:

1. run the thatcher implement to scuff things up in the backyard. It'd too big an area of bare and thin areas to do by hand
2. lay down a thin-ish layer of the topsoil/compost mix, likely a thicker layer in the bare areas
3. put down starter fert (Lesco)
4. put down GCI's blend of tall fescue seed
5. lightly rake (manually) the seed into the topsoil/compost mix
6. put out the sprinklers and set the water timers for a few, short duration waterings throughout the day (although chances of rain all weekend)

Looks fantastic!

Are you really only on .65 acres? That looks like close to an acre from some of those pictures. Our last house was on close to a half acre and it seemed about half of your yard haha.

Personally struggling with sprouting the calabacitas (Mexican zucchini) Normally these things are prolific. Have tried two different packs, and only managed 8/36+ Saw a seed popping up just like in your picture last night. I have this whole bare area designated for them, but only weeds sprouting in there at this point ;(

what's the best thing I can put down on my lawn NOW (as it's already warm 60-70 in northeast) to help fill in my spotty patches and get rid of the crabgrass?

Spent like 200 bucks on a 2-step seed before the warm weather came. Got constant rain (good), but lawn didn't come in nearly as well as it should have. Looking for any help here, I'm desperate.

I would definitely put down Humic12 whenever you get a chance. i always apply RGS/Humic12 at the same time. I only have RGS and Humic12 so my regimen for the season is early Spring, 1st week of June and end of August/1st week of September and that's it. some of the Youtubers actually apply both products each month which to me is a waste or product and money. just like fertilizer 3x each season.

as far as your seeding plan i would put down peat moss after you seed. this helps cover from birds eating the seed.

LOL when i first bought the house i was like WTH! why would they put a sewer drain in the middle of my backyard funny part is i never bothered to really check it out since the grass was over grown and i never put any time or energy in the yard until recently. so i only found out what it really was a couple of years ago when i cut the grass the first time and i hit the lid and it moved over only to expose a fire pit haven't used it yet. as you can see this is the wood that was still in the pit

you're already late to put down any pre emergent for the crabgrass. there is some post emergent herbicides you can buy but if the crabgrass is already mature there's nothing you can use to kill them. also if you plan on filling any barespots it's not ideal to use any weed products. i would just skip the weeds and fill in the bare spots. Scott's usually has some all in one stuff you can use. it's all in the prep work. what did you actually do when you put that 2 step seed in?

If it was a lot of rain, that wasn't necessarily good for the seed. Short, frequent watering is better.

That said, if your spotty patches aren't too huge, you could always redo those spots from scratch and re-seed them. I'd expect at least some weeds on any bare spots, though. If you do go scorched earth and re-seed those areas, supposedly Tenacity will work as a pre-M and not affect grass seed germination (depending on grass type). Haven't tried that yet myself, though.

Depending on the average soil temps, he could still put down a pre-M and snuff out some crabgrass from growing in but he definitely won't be getting all of them at this point.

Any crabgrass that is growing in will at least be at an early stage and not have many tillers. I had good luck w/ Q4+ as a post-emergent. Tenacity should also work but I haven't tried it on crabgrass. Dimension, Quinchlorac, and Prodiamine should all work as well.

I ended up mixing 6oz of Humic-12 w/ the 5oz of RGS I put down today. Used about a 11.5:1 dilution and a 70deg fan tip on my backpack sprayer. Not sure how much got down to the ground vs grass blades before drying. I eventually ran my sprinkler a little bit after I put down the Hyr-Brix several hours after N-ext application. It's lightly raining atm so that'll help get things watered in.

Ya know....I might actually just drop a layer of topsoil over the thatch layer in areas. The seeds will start germinating in the soil and the roots will be able to get thru the thatch....and the thatch will eventually break down in the new soil.

I bought a little bit of peat moss but not a lot. Price justification for getting several cubic yards was not in favor of getting more.

Since all the pix of Hyr-Brix online kind of suck and don't show much of the label, here are some slightly less suck-y cellphone pix (at least they're legible) so you can see it's makeup.

Compared to that GreenYard stuff, the macros/micros are about the same. GreenYard has a little Boron and no Phos (not a big deal). It also has half-ish the quantities of what Hyr-Brix has for micros. Wrt N, it has a tad more ammoniacal nitrogen (2.8%) and less Urea (14.8%) but also breaks down 3 other N types (mix of soluable and insoluable).

I might try the GreenYard stuff. The price is good and the makeup isn't too bad.

Ended up losing the morning due to rain. in the afternoon, I ran the thatcher implement over most of the main part of the backyard. Did 2 passes w/ each being perpendicular to the other. After cleaning up what came up, I started putting dirt down in the more bare/sparse areas. The dirt mix i got is a bit clump so I'm hoping it breaks down. Only made it thru about 1/3 of the yard today so the laboring will resume tomorrow (at least it'll be cooler).

Once that's done (or I run out of dirt....whichever comes first), Humic-12+RGS goes down then starter fert and seed. I'll top dress what I can. For kicks, maybe I'll over seed some parts of the front yard, too. Otherwise, I'll be leaving out sprinklers in the backyard on water timers.

So far, 3 blisters and I got my first mosquito bite of the season. lol
