Yes, and it drives me crazy. I was watching the end of both the US-England and US-Iran games. As a viewer I am looking at the clock get past 90 minutes and thinking "why are they still playing, and now how much time is left??" I had to google it and read about the additional time and extra time things that happen in soccer. It's infuriating and stupid. They should have an exact and consistent end point to games.

This from a country where 3 of the 4 big sports stops and starts every 15 seconds. Soccer is fine, it flows, US based sports stutter for three fucking hours when they should take half that amount of time.

That is fair. Sometimes all the stoppages are painful but we are america so we have to make sure that all the billionaires with these huge TV deals keep getting paid so therefore tons of pauses for commercials to keep the cash flowing. College football games take 4 hours and there is only 60 minutes of actual playing time......

For soccer though, as a viewer I want to know when the match will end. I wanna see when there is 30 seconds left and the team down by 1 goal has to do something crazy to tie the game in the final seconds. From my limited watching I felt like I could not track it that way, or that soccer doesn't work that way which doesn't make sense to me.

fully agree, it's why I stopped watching it years ago (not that I was ever a huge fan, but I did like world cup), the game was entertaining until I witnessed this secret time warp intend only to alter the outcome of the game... and it was LOTS of extra time... all secret... everyone confused what's going on, the announcers couldn't believe how much extra time was added. total BS.

IMO - no matter how amazing the game is - it's total pee-wee amateur hour if you have no rules and you hide the game from the fans and a ref get's to personally decide the outcome. what's the point of playing.

In all seriousness (from me personal opinion) FIFA is no better than WWE wrestling if it's more of a show than a sport. since there is no written definition of what constitutes a win, then it's not really a game, it's an activity. I'm not knocking the athletes who are all tremendous... it's just they play an unprofessional game with no rules or time limits.

All sports have their issues and absurdities - FIFA's is just the most ridiculous. Baseball statistically is a pointless game... they play so many games a season that statistically a single game rounds down to ZERO - pointless. and the fact you don't even have to hit a ball or run, you can get someone else to do it because you are lazy. not a sport, a pass-time.

Football - it's become all wrong, they have developed so many complex rules that's it's no longer a game... it's a sports-debacle dictated by refs and politics.

Darts is probably the only game that actually makes full sense.... throw things at a board, the points add up, the total points to win and the rules are all well known BEFORE a match starts, no player ever gets an advantage, refs can't change the game... that's a real sport.. although I'm on the fence because their heart-rate never gets above mine while I sit on the couch watching it... so certainly not an athletic sport.

I joke light-hearted in all this, I have no skin in the game - FIFA will never attract Americans interest beyond minimal if they don't fix that... American's won't accept that lack of rules and time... now if there were rules - we wouldn't play by them... they just have to be present and clear.

Again, your games stop at random times, injury time is not confusing. At 45 and 90 mins the ref notes added time for injuries and rolling about, then pretty much sticks to it. There's a clock top left of screen that shows he countdown.

Not sure of the confusion.

"As soon as the final whistle was blown, players from Uruguay’s bench swarmed the referees as they attempted to exit the pitch.

Players were seen physically grabbing at the officials, with at least one yellow card being handed out."

so in soccer, you can receive a penalty *after* the game (match) is over? Tell me again, if the game ends at the referee's discretion and can still be penalized after the clock expires, what is the clock for?

Honestly, my interest in soccer ended when my daughter's HS varsity career ended ~7-8 years ago

How's that any weirder than the last 5 minutes of a basketball game taking well over half an hour because of professional fouls?

You don't understand soccer as you call it, we call it football, what the hell is going on with all those dudes dressed as if they are about to jump on a motorbike with helmets and god knows what else that you call American Football, are there any rules or is it a free for all punch up. I have tried to understand the game but I have given up the will to live by trying to understand it, soccer as you call it has Extra Time, how long does your game take with all the down time, I only watch it now when the Girlies are doing their stuff

I'm 100% a soccer idiot as I didn't grow up playing it or watching it. I grew up playing golf, baseball, and watched a ton of baseball and football.

Maybe I am being dense but I can't wrap my head around the game ending at a non-transparent subjective time. I understand the extra time added since the clock rolls through the game and there needs to be an accounting for injuries, substitutions, etc-- totally clear on that. As a viewer not seeing when the game will end is something I can't wrap my head around.

Giving a penalty for an infraction that occurred after a game is over makes sense? Why not just kick enough goals at an empty net after time expires for the win?

I don't watch or care for basketball either. The only sport I watch with any regularity is (American) football, occasionally hockey. Gave up baseball when the Prima Donnas came on the scene. And honestly there are getting to be too many in football now too

Extra time is just so that the game can regain some time lost with stoppages (like injuries or something else). 90 minutes based on a running clock + a few minutes if needed (not always needed).

As said, take a freaking game that has 4 quarters of 12 minutes and a game that starts at 12 pm will never end at 1 pm… it’ll end at 4 or 5…

“I can never watch a game I have no idea when it’s ending” is right lol

Basketball fan here

Devil's advocate: Why would you want something you enjoy to end sooner than later?

The clock in football is pretty predictable. It works out to about 3 minutes of actual time to one minute of play clock. So a 60 minute timed game takes about 3 hours. The networks have that timing down. Now if you want to talk about 3:30 commercial breaks every 10 minutes I will complain right along side of you, but that is just typical of any US broadcast of any TV genre.

Your premise is incorrect, it’s not just an arbitrary number the referee decides during the game. He has a watch and keeps a total of time which has been lost during the game which is then added to the end of each half.

Generally it’s only a minute or two but during the World Cup they are seem to be adding every minute wasted, which is what should happen. The game should have play for the full 90 minutes.

You think football, which is what the rest of the world calls it, is hard try and get your head around Aussie Rules (AFL)! At least the referee puts the added time up on a board at the end normal time.

This is a game of 20 minute quarters which takes around three hours to complete. The 20 minutes is actual play so every time the game stops for whatever reason the clock still ticks (the clock goes up not counts down) and no one knows how long and actual quarter goes for.

Now with that being said both Football and AFL (both 360 degree games) are so much more enjoyable to watch and play than NFL or the Rugby codes.
