Not to pull urgency of helping Texans, but the wind speed projections for Irma are off the charts. According to several meteorologists anyway.
Again; heads up. Harvey victims need our help now. I'm down north of Houston for an event and it's a bit creepy here. Army planes and helicopters flying over. I 45 had flatbeds of huge generators heading south. Fire trucks, ambulances, dump trucks and third wheel campers too. Horrible situation but they appear to be getting some serious help.

It's amazing to me to see groups like the Cajun Navy come to the rescue and arguably with a better and more efficient approach to help people than the federal and state agencies. It's great to see so many people rise up and help others.
It will be interesting to see how Harvey works it's way into Washington in the coming weeks and months regarding the execution of the response, the funds needed for recovery and where that's going to come from, the climate change evidence, etc. I'll leave it at that. The sad thing is this disaster could have largely been avoided if the Texas governments would not allowed for overbuilding and development of areas that were originally capable of managing storm run off. Houston has grown and grown over the decades with a focus on being "business friendly", but the various state, city and county governments did very little to design its infrastructure to handle excessive storm events. It's Houston after all, is subject to hurricanes and massive rain fall. The water has to go somewhere and the governments did a terrible job planning for it. What weren't flood plains are now flooded massively. This is almost entirely due to the overbuilding and lack of storm management infrastructure. Since many of these people did not live in designated flood plains, they weren't required to maintain flood insurance on their homes. So we, the US federal taxpayer, will get to pay that bill to help these people rebuild, not the Texas governments. And these homes will likely be rebuilt in the same areas and little will be done to improve the flood potential situation. Think about that. |

Just FYI - paypal has a portal set up nicely to donate easily through your paypal account. they let you choose from a large list of charities. Just sign into your paypal account and near the top there is a button for Hurrican Harvey. Nice and easy, just did mine.

a shot in the air, may sound stupid but is it possible to collect this water?
of course it must go thru intense purification, cleansing etc... 20 trillions of gallons is estimated. (yahoo article) |

Yeah that's our condo. Fortunate that its not our primary - can't imagine what the locals are going through. Haven't been back since a couple of Mondays ago - how did it look down there? How are they coming along on power? Did you happen to notice if they still have some central staging areas or donation centers that we can bring supplies to when we come back? Thanks! Also want to add to anybody that helped out in Houston/Rockport - anywhere that needed it - you guys rock. God bless you for all that you've done to help these people out! Get in there and rip all that sheetrock out ASAP. The last thing you want is a mold infestation.

Yeah good call - pics were from a couple of weeks ago & got what we could after. Didn't want to hang around in there too long with the few cracked beams. Other side had a couple as well. Sounds like going to be a tear down at this point. |
