after that i'll be ripping out the upstairs flooring which is half carpet half wood and replacing it with bamboo flooring.
In a "just trying to help" way...you should only tack the crown moulding on either the wall or ceiling...not both. Your walls expand and contract through the seasons...and should have the ability to slide. Most tack to the ceiling and let it slide on the wall.

Looks nice though...like what you're doing there.

thanks for the advice! never knew that as during my contracting years we've always done it this way. you can pretty much watch every YouTube video on DIY crown moulding install and everyone of them nail both the ceiling and wall

I imagine you still have to caulk both ceiling and wall though, no? Otherwise that would look rather sloppy leaving one or the other loose for "expansion" reasons.

Looks cleaner when both ceiling and wall is caulked. I use blue tape to give it a super clean line. The only time I've never seen caulked used is when actual wood moulding like oak is used

Looks good! I like the color of the walls. I've got a really dark gray in my bedroom with black accents.

Beautiful work! Your house looks new so it must be really great working with square walls instead of 200 year old horse hair and plaster wavy ones. It took me about 17 hours and 18 lbs of caulk to just to finish off the end of my triple crown which doesn't even look a fraction as nice as yours does.

What the fuck are you on about you nut?

No, seriously. What have you done now, I don't have the endurance if actually reading and comprehending.

Small sentences. Big pictures.

Good seeing you, old friend.

that picture I posted was from last year. that same wall now is an accent wall that I did this year with textured wall paper and painted a dark gray...I believe it's called Gotham Gray from Behr

it's was built in 2002 so the house is 17 years old. the last 2 owners never did any upgrades. the walls are pretty squared so yes, pretty easy installing the crowns. love to see some pictures of your triple crown install

haha Lups! been working on finishing up the crown moulding upstairs last week finishing up this Weekend hopefully. I still have the main entrance ceiling where the chandelier is and 2 of the boys bedrooms. you can see where the wall and ceiling meets I did not paint since I knew the crown moulding would cover that up. I have a lot of Distressed Bamboo flooring I need to put down upstairs but I didn't want to do that until I got the moulding done since my scaffold and ladders probably would scuff and scratch the bamboo flooring.

so just completed 95% of the bamboo flooring in the upstairs hallway. here I completely removed the old hardwood and the old carpet on the steps down to the subflooring and removed the baseboards all around. just waiting for a couple of pieces of bull nose to be delivered to complete the steps.

removed the wooden balusters which than I sanded down the hand rails from the dark cherrywood finish and restained to a satin black finish.

iron balusters came in for the top rails in the hallway and I placed another baluster order for the remaining stairs that go down. will wait to put these in as i'm waiting for the stain to dry for at least 24hrs.

here are the new box newels. picked up 3 of them these will be stained satin black along with the handrails

starting to tear down all the old stairs, wooden baluster, handrails and newels and replacing with new boxed style newels I picked up from Home Depot. because the treads were solid red oak boards already premade as steps when I yanked them out their were no boards underneath so I had to cut some new tread boards for the new bamboo flooring to sit on as well as the matching bamboo bull nose. I won't do the bamboo flooring on the risers as I kinda like the white risers that flow with the mouldings.

new treads

if you're wondering why i'm replacing the wood flooring is because you can see the previous owner tried to redo the flooring by sanding it down and restaining it again but I can tell he had no clue what he was doing as the floor had so many divets from the floor sander from not handling it properly. on the edges it's like he left the sander on for like a minute and it sanded edge lines. also it looks like he didn't vacuum up the dust before staining as you can see a lot and feel rough texture in the stain. the 3rd picture above you can see from the reflections off the floor by the vacuum all the imperfections of not properly sanding the floor so we decided to rip it all out instead of redoing it and we always wanted bamboo flooring with a distressed look with different color variations so we chose Mushroom

edit: here's the picture and you can see the reflections off the floor

wow...great work as always.

Not sure I'd go through the trouble of replacing wood floors already in distress with distressed bamboo flooring, but keep up the good work either way

I wont do the flooring but the flooring folks said it was an option because otherwise they'd have to rip out the tile. The doors should all open as there is a nice gap. As far as the baseboards, i reckon they'll have to redo those. But i assume this has been done plenty of times before?

It's for my entire downstairs so it's not a small area.

I've head of vinyl over tile, which my neighbor did, but not wood. Maybe it's possible but seems unusual to me. (I have tile in some rooms and wood in others, but wood replaced carpet, not tile.) Please post back if you do it. I'd love to replace our tile, but not interested in living through removing it. As I look around at doors, cabinets, built in, baseboards, etc. it seems like it would be a challenging proposition to put wood over the tile.
