The De Havilland CP-121 Tracker.

History:

The Tracker was the first Canadian-built aircraft [under license from Grumman] ever ordered for the Royal Canadian Navy. It replaced the aging Grumman Avenger as the Navy’s anti-submarine patrol aircraft. With the retirement of the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure, the Tracker reverted to land-based coastal surveillance. In 1960, 17 Canadian Trackers were given to the Netherlands. When the Trackers were retired from the Canadian Forces some were converted to water bombers and are still active. Canada built a total of 99.

The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar.

The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar was a VTOL aircraft developed by Avro Canada as part of a secret U.S. military project carried out in the early years of the Cold War.The Avrocar intended to exploit the Coandă effect to provide lift and thrust from a single "turborotor" blowing exhaust out of the rim of the disk-shaped aircraft.

Bonus question:
Which modern helicopter uses the Coandă effect?

I admit my ignorance on helicopters generally; my initial thought when I guessed it had something to do with tail rotors was the Eurocopter/Airbus Fenestron.

In any event, my hope is that I will be receiving a large box (with air holes in it) from Atlantic Canada with a pony in it as my prize. (I wonder how the pony will get along with the llamas? )

Those were great shots. Do you mind me asking what type of lens and settings you were using? I'd like to add a telephoto for my Canon EOS.

I have a dumb question. Over the years, 747's were retired from passenger service and found a new life in cargo. Are the operating costs for A380's sooooo bad that they could never be re-purposed into cargo service? Are they only being phased out because of their limited production numbers making crew training and maintenance/repair cost-prohibitive? Just trying to figure out why they aren't being used to haul cargo from Asia to North America.....

The A380 was not designed with cargo in mind, not sure of the egg head details but you need to build it into the frame to a degree and it is just not there.

Correct, because the A380 is a double deck construction, its frame and stringers are sorted that way, that an additional side cargo door would break the stability overall.
Plus the relative low height of the decks each other would limit heavy and/or bulky freight to inefficient limits. Also to mention the necessary time to load/unload through normal passenger doors.

It is interesting that in the 2020s, two of the mainstays of fire-fighting aircraft in North America are the Tracker and the Neptune, two ancient aircraft designed for anti-submarine duty. Although the Canadair CL-215 purpose-built firefighting aircraft and repurposed jet airliners are making great contributions.

It looks like Boeing's gamble paid off and made a good decision with the Dreamliner instead of trying to compete with Airbus with their A380.

Not to mention that the A380 is so big and heavy that it is limited to certain airports that can handle the weight and wingspan.

Yes, the original CL-215 was replaced by the up-dated CL-415 first by Canadair, then Bombardier, DE Havilland and now Viking Air. Many CL-215 are still in service today around the World.

As usual, Lady Jane, I am a day late and a dollar short (checks expiration date on bottom of foot). Not 215 anymore as of 32 years ago and not Canadair either. But the soundness of the design is well-demonstrated by the Viking Air CL-415. Thank you for the update.

Here's another one that's been resurrected and updated by Viking Air.

I have no idea if this picture is real or photoshopped, but I found it pretty cool nonetheless. Pictured are the XB-35, YB-49 and the B2.
