Played Poppy Hills yesterday, I was +1 on the front 8, then triple bogey'd 9 and it was all downhill from there.

Personally I blame the cart girl, because we didn't see her for the entire front 9 and then she showed up as we were on the 9th fairway. Then we didn't see her again the rest of the round.

Nah jk. I didn't lay up when I should have and was smashing some absolute bombs that overshot some of the doglegs. 4 lost balls. Still saved an 85 thanks to my putting game being absolutely off the charts, I was draining 10-15 footers and even a couple (yes, more than 1!) 30+ footers. 31 putts for the round. Played from the blues, too.

Definitely going back for a redemption round. That was my first time playing it. Now that I know the course better, I know where to lay up and where my angles are for approach shots.

Oh, and I almost chipped 3 in. Bounced off the pin for one of them and lipped it for 2 others.

I haven't played Poppy since I worked for a living. Which is 25 years ago. It tore me a new one but in fairness until I retired I was about a 20 handicap and Poppy is unforgiving. Or was. And yeah, I'd say the cart girl ruined your score and owes you. Good luck collecting.

Question for everyone..

How do you clean your dirty irons? A few of mine definitely need a deep cleaning.

Thanks!

Years ago, I was playing with my Callaway X12's. I was never (and still am not) a stickler for cleaning my clubs.

My OCD brother in law could not stand looking at my dirty clubs. He scrubbed them with Fantastik and towel/rag. I was amazed how the ball flew the next round. Dawn detergent or Simple Green should do the trick.

I will really clean them before a competition (with the frat crew), but for the most part use the brush/bucket wash at the range.

Great timing. I bought a $3 brass wire/nylon bristle club and spike cleaning brush. It does an OK job on club grooves. I clean my club after every shot, using a damp towel in the golf cart or the ball washer at the tee box. The brush helps if the grooves get plugged with dry dirt.

The brass bristles take off some groove paint, so if you care about that, don't use a metal-bristle brush.

Saturday tee time for 9 holes at a nearby new-to-me public course. 18 holes would be a squeeze into my schedule and I don't want to feel rushed, so 9 holes it is.

Thank you guys for the input. I have never cleaned them and they need a good deep cleaning to be honest. I might put the irons in a bucket with warm water and Dawn Dish soap and let them soak over night and will clean them tomorrow before my golf league. I also heard coca-cola works but haven't tried it as I don't want to ruin the finish.

When I wanna deep clean I do warm water and dish soap in a bucket. I scrub with a microfiber towel and use a brush to clean out the grooves. It is very satisfying.

Sounds good and thank you for that! I plan on letting them soak overnight tonight and scrubbing them in the morning.

Any harm if I make the water hot from the faucet? I wouldn't think so.

Nah, I wouldn't worry about the hot water. I usually only soak my clubs for 15 minutes or so. Overnight would help to soften everything but then you will wake up to really dirty and room temp water.

I don't mind leaving them in there overnight to be honest. I have never cleaned them and most of them are pretty caked with dirt and grass.

Personally I don’t show up for a round without my clubs being spotless. Cleaning the sticks is part of my pre-round preparation. I use Simple Green and a nylon brush if I have to, but because I clean my clubs after every shot, usually I only need a little water to soften up any lingering grime.

Got the clubs currently soaking as we speak! Put them in my Home Depot bucket about 10mins ago! Will report back after lunch!

OK I clean my clubs after every shot so no idea why they would ever need soaking. If the grooves are full you get less spin and I prefer knowing what the ball will do. But OK I have seen guys with clumps of dirt on their clubs and they seem OK with it. Up to you I guess.

But..... more importantly too many guys play with slick grips. I play a "lot" of golf. 150 rounds a year so OK you don't have to do it as much as I do. But I've seen guys whose grips are 10 years old and impossible to hang onto. Reality is they need to be changed regularly. But even then in between the grips need cleaning to get the oils from sweat and sunscreen off them. If they are slick you need to grip too tight and that screws up shots.

All it takes is dish detergent in a sink. Dip the grip end in and use a nylon brush and rinse. Heck same with head end. Dip in. brush out the grooves and rinse.

Good idea on cleaning the grips. I will do that before the next round. I just compared my current grips with new grips and I am not convinced new grips will be better. So cleaning them is a good intermediate step.

Got done cleaning my irons and they look amazing! Hot water and Dawn Dish Soap worked like a charm! Had them soaking since 8:15ish this morning and pulled them about 1:30pm this afternoon. Wiped the heads clean and scraped all of the dirt out from each groove.

Never cleaned them ever....so we will see how I hit this evening with them. Will be curious how the ball will respond to the clean irons. Will report back in the morning.

Overall, I am very pleased how they cleaned up. Especially for being 23 years old.

We expect you to report your next score with at least 5 strokes of improvement...

Well...the balls did sound good and hit good off the clean irons but my slice was a limiting factor. The sound was more pure and felt good! I will make sure to keep them clean going forward. Now, just need to work on that damn slice.

So last night, ended up being a 4 man scramble with 6 total teams. We won the scramble with a -5 (30)! Used 5 of my drives to set us up for our birdies! Was a fun night and lots of shenanigans going on! Weather was perfect too!

Hoping to take a few golf lessons to help me hit my irons better this fall / winter before the next company golf league starts April 2025!

My game is bipolar. Maybe time to go for a deep cleaning. Maybe put the Titleist driver on notice. Maybe see a swing coach.

Seems like the newer drivers are designed to go straight. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I learned to play a consistent and reliable draw. I’ve lost so many strokes to starting the drive right and losing it right. I have not been successful for two seasons getting it dialed in.

I might reshaft my old Nike tour driver (but I dislike the brand now) so I can hit a consistent draw again.

Maybe do it all! I felt like when I cleaned my irons it helped alot with the feel / contact of the ball. I know it's my swing that needs fixed so I can stop slicing the ball. I had the range with the irons, just need to hit the ball a little more straight.

I go to the driving range once or twice a week.

The issue is really translating range time to the game. Those 2 ft missed putts are the real killer!
