Said it before and will say it again, this culture of hiding fees in the US and Canada is infuriating to someone who is used to the sticker price being the sticker price. Taxes, more taxes, eco fees, disposal fees, tips, service fees etc ..... does my head in. The listed price is merely a suggestion.
Maybe in California and New York, but not most other places. Previously, at sit down restaurants in most places, it was food, tax and a line for discretionary gratuity unless it was a large party, in which case they added 18% gratuity. I have always looked at the bill and there were no fees slipped in, tip expectations at fast food or other random places, or tip suggestions ranging from 20% to 30%+. Those are absolutely new to most of us.

Taxes in general are crazy. You have taxes on taxes and pay taxes on things you’ve already paid tax on. And IRS is getting crazier on collecting more revenue. For example, I used to use PayPal to do some transactions, mostly buying things. However, I sold a set of wheels that I had reconditioned and powder coated. I had a tax form from PayPal and actually had to go through the process of showing I actually lost money on the wheels so I didn’t pay tax as if it was ordinary income of an extra $3800. So I closed my PayPal account.

I found it in Miami too, service fee at about 15% already added then there's still a line for a tip. Like excuse me?

In a hotel or a restaurant? That is common in hotels for room service. I have never seen it in a Miami restaurant though.

I don't want to turn this political but it's common in blue states or cities. Anywhere in California, Washington St, Denver etc.

I have never seen this in Arizona either.

Went to a diner for lunch (that's all there was!)
Waitress understood I wanted the Chief CrazyHorse shake, but she also understood my wife wanted some but doesn't like chocolate.
When lunch and my shake finally came, she "accidentally" made a cup without chocolate, and some with.

When the bill came for $20, she got a $10 tip.

I think they do it in more touristy areas. My mom lives in Miami Beach and a lot of places there add the tip automatically. The excuse is a lot of tourists don't know about tipping...

Wait. There are people who don't like chocolate? And you managed to find one of these people? And decided to marry them? Hopefully you didn't know about the chocolate phobia before marrying her.

It was a "strategic" decision. Outside of lemon cake and Jordan almonds, she's not into much in the way of sweets.

Which leaves it all up to me to eat

Not good. The diabeetus hasn't slowed my intake of chocolate any more than being a canine has slowed my dog's. I don't share much with the little bitch though.

Most likely reason I am diabetic is the roll of the genetic dice, and a strep infection when I was 14.

I tip based on the level of service I receive, same as I always have. I over tip if I get excellent service. There is no need to punish the wait staff,, they have to make a living too.

This is madness--

I placed an order for my wife and I at Noodles (a "quick casual/fast food pasta chain here in Denver) via their App while I was at home, intending to drive up and pick up the food.

Did I mention that I used their App?

It defaults to 15% tip on your order when you check out, and you can go up there.

I get in my car, drive to the restaurant, walk in, and there's my bag of food on the counter. Grab the bag off the counter and drive home to eat with my Wife.

There was *literally* ZERO interaction with anyone in the store (which is fast-foodish). I was in the store for *maybe* 30-40 seconds from walking in to walking out.

And for this, I'm supposed to tip 15-20+%???

WTF, over?

It's nuts.

Oh, heck ya!
Especially, these electronic tipping boxes.
They even have them at Walgreens! Why am I tipping the Walgreens retail person?

If you can witness to a waiter about God and tip them really well I think that generosity is really awesome and can be a sign that God is generous too.

I really hate how they give you attitude when you don't tip (no "thank you"+sour face). Was just at a stand in a mall where they have ice cream, drinks, and I ordered a milkshake...they mean to tell me that the quality of milkshake changes from customer to customer? I'm already paying freaking 8 bucks for a reg milkshake, it's part of their job to prepare it...where's the added service? They should just tack it onto the price, I hate this expected crap. Needless to say, last time I go there.

Every place you go now wants that tip. If you like their shakes, no need to stop going there. As you said, they did nothing extra to deserve it. Just say thanks and then leave. That's what I do at places I go. The hell with their attitude. I tip when a tip is deserved.

Their shakes aren't good; I hate how every place can't make it probably as good as I do, I like them thick - it was just kinda avg/watery. First and last time I go, I can do w/o the attitude. The prb is that virtually everywhere expects you to tip, the brainwashing is real, it's gotten insane...someone above mentioned tipping his BMW advisor? WTH....

The last time I went to an indy shop for a paint job, the price was the price. I didn't have to tip. If I go buy a cymbal at the music store I don't pay a tip. If I buy a steak at Kroger I don't pay a tip to anyone. If the food industry (in general) would pay their employees a living wage, this stupid tipping thing would go away for the most part, if not entirely. If companies could get away with paying their employees less, they would. On the other hand servers in the food industry can make A LOT of money if they are are talented, not just good. I been confronted by the tip in the card machine at a fast food place, this has to stop.
