Checked back on this poll today and it's funny how this is a BMW forum and the BMW is losing 3:1. I went to the dealer yesterday for service and I saw an i8 in the showroom and the MSRP was 154K USD!!! My mind started wandering and thinking about all the options I could be having for 154K.
AMG GTS Nissan GT-R (still have a good chunk of change) 911 GT3 (still have some change) Aston Martin Vantage V8 (still have 20+k change) R8 Heck, I'd buy cars 50k cheaper than the i8 even if they were to cost the same like F-Type V8 R Coupe/Vert Lotus Evora (whichever one is the top model) Fully optioned Cayman GT4 Tesla P85D Corvette Stingray Z06 Viper SRT 10 If I were to spend my cash "wisely" on cars only, I'll get a CLK 63 AMG BS and a stripper 1M in black. If there's any change left, I'll mod my 135. IMO the i8 is the victim of high expectations but that's fair given its price and the relatively recent release of the extreme potential in hybrid cars (evident in 918, P1, LaFerrari). Turns out an M4 will give it a run for its money...I'm not sure about fuel consumption/running costs though. |

Of all those who made a choice, how many have actually driven both cars. I have and ultimately bought a i8. It is not only beautifully built with fit n finish that is impeccable, it provides 3 different driving experiences in one. In traffic, the e drive is quiet, remarkably smooth and uses no gas. Comfort mode is just that - extremely comfortable and luxurious. And then there is sport, which transforms the i8 into a genuine high performance sports car. Wonderful sound and the best combination of the instanaeous torque of the electric motor combined with the added power of the gas turbo. What makes the i8 unique amongst all other sports cars, including Porsche, R8, Ferrari, Lamborghini, is how tight, solid and rigid the chassis feels. The suspension is a true marvel. Makes the roads feel like they have all be repaved. Go over bumps, uneven pavement and there are no rattles emminating from the dash, no noises coming from the chassis flexing, nothing. It is dead silent with the absence of extraneous noises which drive me batty in my Turbo S and every model Porsche I have owned. I have extensive experience with all the sport car contenders and have owned many of them, and I can attest to the fact that when it comes to regular road driving, as opposed to track work, no car has proven more satisfying to drive than my i8. The feel of being in the cockpit is for me, the most comfortable and satisfying I have yet experienced. I love everything about the i8 and the fact that I drove 1250 Kms without visiting a gas station is a nice bonus.

I'm a driver so I'd say R8 but for more show around town, I think the i8 wins.

Ask yourself what a I8 is going to be worth in 5-8 years. Not sure there is a proven track record for that type of technology aging well. Very risky proposition considering the competition and choices for electric cars will probably grow quite a bit over the next years.

Do you people read. I want to hear from only those who have actually driven both cars. Until you do so, your opinions are like assholes- everyone has got one but they are full of shit.

Haha. Seriously..I'm Wrxified and from this day forward I declare this my thread. Going forward, I only want people to share their opinion if they voted for Obama, ate tuna casserole for lunch, and own a Turbo S, I8, and a 1984 Chevette with less than 50,000 original miles. |

What is the point of offering an opinion when it is based on nothing. I do not recommend one restaurant over another when I have never eaten at either. If one has not driven car A or car B, what value does an opinion on which car one would choose to buy have. However, continue with your fantasy thread as I certainly would not want it to interfere with logic or reality.

But back to the topic, R8 all day. Although a 911 would be my, undeniably more boring, choice. |

Not sure why the Porsche comment would hurt your feelings, though. I was saying that I prefer the 911 to both the i8 and R8, even if most people find them boring. I would even take a C2S over the BMW and Audi. |

My point is a simple one. If I was asked which vehicle I would choose between a Dodge Caravan or the Honda Odyssey, I would not offer an opinion since I have not driven either of them. My opinion on this topic would be useless. That is my point.Your opinion is of no value between the R8 and the i8 if you have not driven both or either of them.
Your comment about the Porsche was very unclear. You stated the 911 was" undeniably more boring choice". It is very NOT undeniable. Many, including the 30000 buyers of 911s sold last year would be deniers. |
