Hey guys just wondering what are the major cons of the iphone?
I'm really keen to get one but the MAJOR things holding me back are: 1. Battery life - how good is it really? I use my phone at least 3 hours a day 2. Camera - is it still only 2mp? Can you make video calls? Also can you make videos at all?? |

This is my favorite iPhone websites-
http://weblogs.redeyechicago.com/iphoneblog/ It contains a crapload of links as well. Scroll down a bit on the first page (at posting here 9/16/08) and there is an interesting post on battery life. For me (1st gen iPhone) it's not what I would call great. From the reading I have done, the 3G version "can" have similar issues. I charge my 1st gen at least every other day. My "average daily" use is less than 30 minutes of talk time, email on auto-retrieve hourly, 0-30 minutes of gaming (Apple's Hold Em' poker rocks), 0-30 minutes of iPod, retrieval of 0-5 webpages and links, weather info 0 to a few radar views. Like any DC powered device it's all about usage. If the (unplugged) iPhone is used on WiFi/Bluetooth/3G it's going to burn more power. Some games, obviously the more processing intense ones, REALLY chew through the juice. iPod playback doesn't seem to hit the phone really hard, but it's of course going to be a greater hit than standby mode. If you have the phone setup to "fetch" email it will burn more than manual retrieval. So it all depends on how YOU use the phone. From your brief note, I would say you should buy a car charger before you leave the store LOL. I believe the camera is unchanged (hardware) from the first gen, could be wrong. No video with an unhacked phone, again could be wrong, there are SO many apps on the iTunes app store now that I could have missed and again be wrong. Overall it's a great device, but there are some gotcha's and battery life COULD be one of them depending on usage. Texting is text only (odd statement when seen in text), but there are some workarounds (sort of) for that. |

No official video recording app available through the iTunes App Store yet, but I've heard it's coming, from several different developers.
I charge my phone about every other day, more if I really use it a lot. New firmware just released (2.1) is supposed to improve battery life. It also addresses my main concern, which was that my 16GB took _forever_ to backup when sync'ing - like 3+ hours. My wife's 8GB took less than 30 minutes, and we have roughly the same amount of stuff stored on our phones, so I think it was a bug in their bits. I haven't done a backup since I finished the firmware upgrade last night, but I might do one tonight just to test the speed. Overall, I LOVE it. Took a trip recently and the GPS was a godsend, even without automatic rerouting and turn-by-turn updating. Gmail integration is near-perfect. Video recording and MMS would both be welcome upgrades, but neither one is a dealbreaker for me. We did also pick up 2 car chargers, so we have 'em just in case.

Have had my 3G for a few weeks now .. battery life seems better w/ the latest firmware as I am recharging about every 3rd day. I think it is a good device, my biggest gripe is customization .. I can't for the life of me figure out why this phone will not natively support themes .. I'm stuck w/ the same looking phone when ... it would be the #1 reason for me to jailbreak .. just to be able to do this ..
BTW .. it works prefect w/ the IPOD/USB option in the 135i !! Crowley

This has prob been answered multiple times but I'm too lazy to look through the thread...why does the BMW ipod interface not charge the iPhone..wtf BMW? It charges my ipod touch, but not my iphone...and they're basically the same thing. odd.

I have one, but that means I cant listen to music and charge it at the same time. Plus the BMW adapter is nicely built into the glove box so it looks cleaner.
Oh well...I'll live

ps...this is the 2006 version of the BMW ipod adapter...before the iphone existed. I'm assuming that's the issue, although i still find it odd that it charges my ipod touch with no problem but not the iphone.

Ahh .. sorry man .. didn't notice ... just an FYI .. on the 135i's adapter it does charge the iphone ... I wonder if it would work in your car if you just bought the adaptor or if it is totally different? Crowley

I think its the same so it'd work. I'm trading for a 135 soon enough anyway so i can hold off.

Can the 2.0 software handle MS-Word/Excell/ppt files like the new Blackberry's can? (for instance: save a word.doc file on the phone and email it to someone?)

I'm pretty sure it can, but I can't give you a solid answer.

Answered my own question just now...somebody cares, I know it!
http://www.dataviz.com/products/docu...ify/index.html It's a 3rd party software suite called "Documents to Go"...currently comes bundled with the new Blackberry's to allow MS-office compatibility. |
