For those worried about their (relative) safety:
The problem is that the chemical that 'burns' to propel the airbag out, ends up burning to quickly, or what you might call, exploding. This change happens over time, from long exposure to high heat/humidity. That is why the US gulf states will have first priority. If you live outside of an area like that, you can worry less. As some other people pointed out, the problem actually is very limited, and by deploying the recall in an age and humidity targeted manner, they expect it to stay that way. That is why they say, drive the car, but come in when we tell you. The first recalls are very likely being targeted based on where problems have already been observed. |

The idea of bringing in my car to a dealership to sit and rot for possibly a year is about as bad of a first world problem one could have. I'll let it sit at home, my paint already thanks me.

The highest priority (for BMW) is earlier 2000's M3s. Maybe because of a higher incidence of crashes? |

Actually, the increased explosive potential is caused by cycles of high humidity, and low humidity. Every time the powder is damp, and them dries out, it forms smaller particles. This increases the explosive potential varying amounts, depending on specifics. Imagine a city like Seattle, which has these cycles nearly constantly. When/if they roll out the replacements, will they just be brand new replacements of the same design? That's something I experienced on a new Volvo several years ago. The only fix they had for two years, was replacing the old part with an exact new copy. |

I'm not sure about Washington state, but California and most the East coast is in the second priority region, so there is awareness of the problem developing outside the gulf states. They probably examine used inflators for signs, or test others that have been in the field.
And yes, some airbags are replaced with the same design due to the shortage, with the understanding it may be recalled a second time. NHTSA claims a deadline of Dec 31 2019 for those to be 2nd-recalled. BMW might not be doing that with these more recent recalls, since they are apparently sourcing a new part. But some of the earlier recalls might have been done that way. |

U.S. now saying another 85 million potential recalls unless Takata can prove they are safe.

FYI, BMW NA is allowing rentals through your dealership if you request for one. My particular dealership said no to a BMW loaner, but they said I can pick up something like an Accord or Camry.
The car can stay at home, but stipulation is that I don't drive the e92 until airbag is available. They'll check key fob for mileage |

Will you really feel safer in a Camry, accord or Kia vs. the low chance you get into a front end collision? I'll keep my 135i and wait.

I'll just throw this out there.
My dealer had me sign the form that you guys have seen previously and my car is sitting at home safe and sound. I plan to detail it and start it and drive it around on the driveway (1 mile long driveway at my house) once a month. They put me in a 2016 328i base model 4 door (no options) for an unspecified amount of time through enterprise. There are worse things in life than driving around a 2016 BMW. Good grief guys—be safe and just take the dumb rental and save the mileage on your car.

Worth noting that they won't do dick if its the passenger airbag. They will just advise you not t put any passengers there. Thats the deal with my wife's Toyota Sequoia.

Btw, noticed you also have an e9x and E36 M3 combo. It's a hell of a lot of fun! If I get this rental car, I'll be able to do a few nickle and dime things that I've been meaning to do for a while on both cars.

Anything under 2013 the dealer will not put you in a BMW loaner nor are the obligated to. You may have gotten lucky with the rental agency. anything older than 2013 you will get a rental car that they sublet out to who ever they use.
But yes you can keep your car at home but they will be recording mileage to verify it isn't driven, any discrepancy won't be good. |

The airbags won't show up until at least the end of the summer, which is what, 4 months maybe? I'd like to be able to at least drive the car around the block a few times to get the fluids going and avoid getting a flat spot. What if this drags on for a year? I've been told that if I get sick of waiting and want to drive my E92 again, I can just return the rental. I'm going to have to double check that.

Called another dealership and brought up the issue that I don't want my car just sitting there for half a year. Essentially, that form you sign is more for a liability purpose, rather than you putting miles on both the rental car and your personal car. The lady essentially said we are told to tell customers that you cannot drive the car. But if you do and something happens to you, you're on your own. Just FYI.

For many years cars never had airbags ,and the human race some how survived. I know how useful they are for safety. But shouldn't there be a way to deactivate/disconnect them until they can be replaced so you won't have to worry about it blowing out in your face? Just sign a waiver, have it deactivated and then you can drive your car like people did for decades before airbags were invented.

Takata recall just expanded by 35-40 million more cars.
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-w...-bag-inflators Apparently it's going to go on for a long, long time. Used cars are now worthless. Anyone think it's a conspiracy to sell new cars? Apparently the airbags are good for 6-8 years but after that humidity & heat causes it to be suspect. |

Mostdealerships are letting you keep your car at home. Mine definitely is. Would have been a deal breaker otherwise
