Ayurvedic treatment for asthma

Irwin Antony Tigga was an asthma patient. He experienced breathing problems frequently and was hospitalised many a time. He had lived in metros like Mumbai and Calcutta before coming to Kerala, the land of Ayurveda. Once settled in Kerala, he decided to approach an Ayurvedic health resort to undergo treatment for asthma.
``The Ayurvedic practitioner asked me about my diet and lifestyle first,’’ says Irwin. ``He said that mine is the dry type asthma and I should take a lot of fluid type food to increase the moisture and oxygen content in the body, he adds. Apart from the diet changes he underwent a Swasa kasa treatment there which included body massage, urovasti, pizhichil, nasyam etc; he felt much relief to his breathing problems after the therapy.
Ayurveda classifies asthma into many categories such as dry type, infection type, congestive type etc and offers different treatment to each of them. Dry type of asthma is found in those who are sensitive to cold climates and have a frail body, says Radhika Chakravarthy, an Ayurvedic student.
``Ayurveda says that dry asthma is a result of an imbalance in air element in our body while the infection type is caused by an imbalance of fire element,’’ says Radhika. The reason for the congestion type asthma is attributed to the imbalance of water element in the body and Ayurveda is well equipped to cure any kind of asthma, she adds.

According to Ayurveda, increased in kapha dosha in the stomach is the underlying cause of asthma. From the stomach, the increased kapha blocks the flow of natural air, creating spasm in the bronchial tree, hence it progresses to the lungs, trachea and bronchi. This results wheezing in asthma.

To treat asthma the Ayurveda way, the kapha lodged in the lungs and bronchi, need to return to the stomach where it will be eliminated. Asthma is usually brought on by allergies and no matter what is the cause, it is important to relive the person from difficulty in breathing and asthmatic wheezing during an attack.

With the rapid increase in Asthma, more people are turning towards Ayurvedic treatment as a remedy for Asthma. The holistic approach of Ayurvedic medication treats diseases without producing any side effects and also ensures that preventive measures are taken in order to find the cause of the disease and help prevent it. Ayurveda has proved to be a very effective and reliable type of medication for a number of other disease conditions as well.

There are different kinds of Ayurvedic therapy for the treatment of Asthma, but some of the most common ones are:
-Holding a glass of honey under the nose and inhaling the air from it. This helps to clear the air passages and it is also consumed with dates and black resins. This is considered to be a good lung tonic.
-Massaging the chest with camphor oil. This eases breathing.
-Mixing 5 grams of Amla with a tablespoon of honey acts as an expectorant.
