Question Hawaii

I'm going to Hawaii with some relatives around end of May or early June. It will be my first time there. What do people recommend for...

Place to stay?
Sightseeing?
Things to do?
Food/restaurants?

And is Visa card widely accepted there?

Thanks in advance.

maui is a little on the touristy side - just about everyone on that isle is either a resident who works in the tourism industry or a visitor.
Other isles are a little more conventional but not quite as pristine. Kauai is nice but real $$.

Cracks me up how people are surprised when they get to Hawaii

"OMG! There is a WalMart here? And Enterprise car rental? Oh wow! Even TGI Fridays and Cheesecake Factory!"

I'm like: "Dumbass.... You are STILL in United States!"

Been to O'ahu twice and once on Maui. Going to Maui again this summer. That was an agreement with the GF. I was free to go snowboarding with bunch of dudes on valentines, but in return I have to go to Maui with her... what a punishment. lol

Been to all 4 major islands. Maui and Big Island once, Oahu and Kauai twice. Kauai is our personal favorite. Oahu can be touristy if you stay in Honolulu, but has great sightseeing (Honolulu, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, North Shore). Best is to not stay put in Honolulu and drive around the island. Wife and I stayed at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina on the SW coast of Oahu last May and will never stay anywhere else again. Absolutely stunning place, best beach right next to it and not stuck in Honolulu hell.

I've been to Hawaii (Big Island), Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai twice.
Kauai is the most "Hawaiian" island in terms of lushness. If you saw the movie "A Perfect Getaway," I recommend hiking that trail. I've done it twice and it's fantastic.
Definitely drive up Mt. Haleakala on Maui. On a nice day, it's AMAZING being above the clouds. Feels like you're on Mars. Also Mauna Kea on Hawaii.
Visit the Princeville Resort on Kauai (I stayed for free). It's amazing.
Mauna Loa Macadamia nut farm and Dole Plantation are ok if you're looking for touristy things to "kill some time". Pearl Harbor and Diamondhead on Oahu.
Molokai is desert-like with some cool ranches. Not much to do.
Kona and Hilo are cool on the big island.

dude, that's nice...i go to hawaii often, mostly on Oahu, that is where Pearl Harbor is..
I'll be there last week of may and 3 weeks in June..working, and this where i'll stay...
working for the govt has its perks...

depending on how long you'll be there, plan out your stay...many places to see for first timers...ie North Shore, Waikiki beach, which i think is meh..lots of food places of course, and like solefald said, it's STILL the US, but since you're from canada, maybe an eye-opening experience for you...have fun in any case though.

Cool pics Bimmer335i. Don't know when that last pic was taken, but my wife and I were pulling up to the Pearl Harbor museum in January, 2005 just as the USS Ronald Reagan was docking adjacent across from the museum. Saw the sailors posted along the rails, etc. Was quite the site, particularly when we took the boat over to the Arizona memorial. I understand that it was stopping by on its way for the tsunami relief effort in Indonesia after the 04' Christmas tsunami.

Yeah I was on that ship, the USS Bonhomme Richard, LHD-6, which I commissioned back in 1998. In that pic, we were pulling in June 2008. All US naval vessels, homeported in Pearl or not, render salute to the Arizona Memorial and other memorials as they pass by, and you will see all sailors/Marines or any crewmembers who is not on watch will get topside and salute.

Niiice. I visited {Pearl Harbor a long time ago (like 10 years?) but was too young to understand anything. I remember looking into the water and seeing the sunken SS Arizona (??) as well as the long list of people that lost their lives there carved on the wall. It was pretty cool.

PS- i wonder if I know who you are. I know a few people down in SD. It would be pretty funny if we know the same people (not on the forums obviously).

I meant in comparison to other credit cards. I'm from Canada and I only have one card that's in USD, and that's a Visa. I prefer to use that than another card, so I'll have some control of the exchange rate.
