Depends on the majority of your photo needs. If you are low light get the flash, if not get the lens. I would get the flash first, but my needs might be different than yours.

You're gonna get both at some point. Just pick one and save up for the other...

Make sure you get an off-camera wireless kit. Shoe-mount flashes FTL.

i vote flash too... unless you REALLY need a wide angle but 18 is pretty wide to begin with.

I would say no kit bag is complete without one flash regardless of situations. You really never know when you are in need of one.

If you do a lot of portrait/people pictures, then the flash. If you do a lot of landscape, the lens.

Also, you need 580 EX. You must have heard lighting is everything in Photography... something you cannot cheap out The Lens + the Flash. You can cheap out on the accessories, the camera body even (to a degree), but not the lens or the flash. The flash metering algorithm and system is more updated and advanced in 580 than the 430. Also, 580 can be used as a master to slave other flash, which WILL come handy in case you do have to shoot something. 430 can only be used as slave. Also, there is a small white reflector piece with 580 that 430 does not have, which MAKES A HUGE difference in light bouncing when you take indoor shots. Trust me, you want a 580. UNLESS, of course, you find a great deal on 430 (less than $200 brand new), and then in a couple years, get a 580 (or whichever version they have at that time) and use the 430 as a slave. As for the lens, 10-22 is a GREAT lens and it performs very well even in low-lit situation. If you take a lot of landscape, architectural, general scenery, or event photos, you need 10-22mm.. but if you dont take a lot of specific photos above, then you can probably hold off on the 10-22mm. Also, because you have Xti, and you really enjoy your photography, you might want to consider if you will ever shell out for a FF camera (such as the 5D II, or even 1D). If you do, you might want to consider holding off on the 10-22, because they dont work on the FF and on the FF, all you need is the 17-40 f4L (which is about the same price as 10-22 I believe) for the wide angle shots.

The 14mm is like a specialty lens, just like the tilt lens, for example.. I mean.. the only thing that I can think of that requires a 14mm (which if you put on a tripod, you can ALMOST see your own trip leg out front, thats how WIDe it is)... I dont know.. on the 14mm, I took a quick 2 min tryout at B&H, its wide and sharp, but the edges are quite distorted, just like it is on the 10-22mm. Besides, if you really want to take serious architecture or architecture-related scenes, you need a tilt lens. Anyway, thank god I know for sure I WILL NOT need that lens... how much is that? like $1800? 17-40L is very sharp and good enough in most of the situations, aeven though it is only a f4.

thanks for all the replies so far and it seems like an even split.
i deff do not expect to be upgrading to a ff cam anytime soon. i have access to a 10-22 via my father from work but its not an on demand lens. I know i want a flash and need a flash. i dont need all the extra capabilities of the 580 but being able to make the 580 a master off body is good, but how often will i be doing that. ahhh so many questions and options i must ask myself.
