the new P&S from Sony WX1 and TX1 shoot 720p HD. Nikon's new S640 and S70 shoot HD video. and some of Canon's new P&S's.

there are quite a few others, too.

just depends on what your budget is, and size requirements.

and just because it shoots HD video, doesn't mean the video is going to look spectacular.

Depends on how much you want to spend and if you are willing the take the time to learn how to used the camera. If you just want a camera that takes pictures and can shoot video, but you dont want to learn how to "use" it outside of auto mode, then get a point and shoot. If you want to learn how to use it outside of "auto" mode however, and have a larger budget, get a dslr.

The best part about a DSLR is you can upgrade it as you progress your skills. Instead of trashing that Tx1 in a few years you could just upgrade a lens.
....but it doesn't shoot video.

why do you need to shoot video?

Video function is just some gimmick and most of semi-serious photographers dont even care about video-capturing capabilities. Care more about the metering algorithm, compatability, the sensors, etc.

Well for a 500 budget its going to be hard to get into a dslr that shoots videos. If you want a very very high end p&s, look at the leicas, they are amazing and can produce very high quality pictures. (not sure if they can shoot video though),

$250
Nikon's newest S640 - shoots HD video too.

i'd prefer the sony wx1 for $350 - it's got a 24mm wide lens with f/2.4 aperture (versus the S640's 28mm and f/2.7).

most P&S only give you 35mm as the widest. you'll have more fun with 24mm, i'm sure.

in all fairness.
Ti1 1080 is 20fps.
but if u shot in 720 it's 30fps, which is way better.

here's a good read for the Sony WX1 that i was recommending you get:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/20/te...h/20pogue.html

not that you should heed much of what NYT should tell you about cameras....
