McLaren slapped with 3 race ban...but not

http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2009/4/9281.html

Quote:
The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council has handed McLaren a three race ban for bringing the sport into disrepute after they were found to have misled race stewards at March’s Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The ban will be suspended, however, in light of the ‘open and honest way’ in which team principal Martin Whitmarsh addressed the Council on Wednesday, and will only be applied if further evidence emerges, or there is another breach of the International Sporting Code.

The full statement from the FIA:
At an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council held in Paris on 29 April 2009, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes admitted five charges of breaching article 151c of the International Sporting Code relating to events at the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix.

The following decision was taken:

“Having regard to the open and honest way in which McLaren Team Principal, Mr Martin Whitmarsh, addressed the WMSC and the change in culture which he made clear has taken place in his organisation, the WMSC decided to suspend the application of the penalty it deems appropriate.

“That penalty is a suspension of the team from three races of the FIA Formula One World Championship. This will only be applied if further facts emerge regarding the case or if, in the next 12 months, there is a further breach by the team of article 151c of the International Sporting Code.”

The full reasons for this decision will be issued shortly.
What? That's like saying, "I'll kill you, but only if you rape my family."

Mercedes should just ditch McLaren. They already have a good team with Brawn GP and should let McLaren go to a team desperate enough to affiliate themselves with those liars and cheaters.

Big effing deal. I've never seen professional athletes fudge the truth a bit for their advantage.
The race marshalls have only themselves to blame for being so gullible. The ruling is only fair considering how badly LH got screwed by the marshalls in Spa last year.
Let's get back to REAL racing.

McLaren is going to hide any additional evidence for 12 months!
I'm a McLaren fan...also supporting Brawn GP and BMW Sauber....but loves the passion of Ferrari.....especially when the mechanic bang his head after Hamilton wins the WDC in Brazil....

The FIA did the right thing by not giving them any actual race bans, for now. And I say this as someone who just plain can't stand the McLaren team. The loathing I have for them is deep. I will never forgive them for making the suggestion for grooved tires and 10% narrower track. But, I also feel that the best thing for our beloved sport is for all the teams to be out on the track, creating action for us fans to watch.

If the McLaren team does anything that gets them in trouble over the next 12 months, I think the penalties should be so harsh, that it makes them not race for a season.

The sport needs to have integrity. The teams can't be going around thinking that they can get away with bloody murder. The possible further penalties that could be applied to McLaren's case, should also be a deterrent to other teams that might want to go the road of dishonesty. A punishment shoudln't only be about punishing the guilty. It should also prevent others from following the path of the guilty.

I totally agree with you. When it all comes down to it, that's what matters most.

Kindly ask McLaren to stop shitting where they sleep. Maybe once they stop their shenanigans, the racing can continue.

Nice deflection.

Didn't say that at all. But, niether of the 2 teams you just mentioned have been hauled before the WMSC for such being flat out lying to the officials.

What we just witnessed, was not political BS, it was 1 team being complete lying cheats. None of this mess would have happened if McLaren had been more upfront with the TRUTH! If the McLaren Team had been truthful, they would still have a 4th place and an additional 5 points.
