What is the Adaptive Suspension subscription?

How does the Adaptive Suspension subscription differ from the factory optioned Adaptive Suspension? If you don't option from the factory, you don't have the electronically variable dampening shocks. Then what does the subscription actually give you?

On some BMWs the adaptive suspension is installed on them at the factory. Depending on the market it can be activated for a one time charge, or it can be chosen as an option when the car is ordered or, in a small number of markets it can be purchased as a monthly subscription, but there aren’t many of those markets.
