XM or X5 M60i when cost is similar

Hello,
My wife and I are planning to lease or purchase our first BMW very soon. We believe in V8s, so we're only interested in V8 versions. We have driven both the XM and the X5 M60i and like both.
We have been quoted on both for leasing and the XM (HUGE discounts due to not selling) is not much more expensive than the X5 M60i (for a lease) and we can afford the additional cost. **One small caveat, the X5 is specc'ed exactly how we want it. XM is a color that we wouldn't choose if ordering, but we don't dislike it.

She prefers the X5, due to the panoramic skylounge sunroof. (It is a pity the XM doesn't have one.) I love the idea of the PHEV, but also worried about the reliability of it. I do love the X5, so it is a win either way, as far as I'm concerned. I just keep wondering are we stupid for not going with the XM if the additional cost will be minimal.
I'm just curious to hear opinions from those who know more than I do!

I know it is completely subjective but I happened to see 2 XM's yesterday at BMW of Manhattan when I was picking my car up from an oil change and I think they are terribly ugly. My 16 year old daughter was with me next to one and she did not like it either - she said it was weird looking. I think the X5 looks great.

Since you are leasing, I would not worry about post-warranty repairs down the road which would likely be WAY higher on the XM.

What is the difference in insurance between the two?

I would skip the M.

Real world problem. Can’t go wrong with either car. Both have more power than you can use on the street.

Fantastic question and I had not considered that specific difference, but will investigate.

Absolutely! My wife and I joked about it being a "first world problem."
