Northern Lights

Came out of the pub tonight (near Cambridge) and saw amazing “ray patters” in the sky. They were “white” but camera phone photos showed up green and purple. Question - are the N Liights always white to the naked eye?

Wish I'd been back home in North Yorkshire but as luck would have it I'm down in Brighton fixing up my sister's flat to sell. Standing outside there was the merest hint of something and you almost had to look away from it to see it. However, taking a snap with the iPhone in night mode produced this trickery. Wasn't nearly as good to the naked eye...

I dunno whether it’s always like that but as you said, it was barely visible to me and my daughter to the naked eye. My knackered old eyes barely saw anything, she said she could see white “bars” which sounded like she was just describing light pollution. But the phone camera on long exposure did the trick and showed what it really was, I think we missed the best of it and I have no idea how cameras work so didn’t adjust settings etc but we got a couple of OK snaps

They’re definitely much paler colours to the naked eye than the phone shows. It’s pretty dark where I am in the Lakes, which no doubt helps, but the colours were visible in person too.

Nature at it's finest. With all the sht that's going on in the world and our busy lives, it's refreshing and humbling to see natural beauty like that. I've never seen them. Must schedule in that Norway trip soon!

The aurora was visible as far south as southern Nevada, say 36°N. Guy the other side of the Spring Mountains from me where the skies are dark got some great shots.
