Fortnite for my 10 year old son?

My oldest keeps asking me if he can download and play Fortnite. We have an Xbox one and Nintendo switch but not sure which console he would play it from.

The game is rated for 13 year olds and up. As I understand it there is violence but not bloody and gory type of stuff. My youngest is 7 so I assume he would get into it too if the older one is playing.

Anyone on here have a strong opinion either way on this? Seems like a few of my kids' friends/cousins have Fortnite but thought the gamers on here would have some good perspective on what seems appropriate.

I think the bigger issue is constant video watching (ticktoc, instagram). Not gaming. I grew up to Atari, Sega, Nintendo, PS1234, Xbox and now on to PC. I came out just fine. But I also grew up in the 80's, when I knew better to do dumb shit or I would get my ass beat.

If your kid is a good kid and likes video games. Then I say let him play and just monitor how he does.

I let my daughter play iphone games. But she has NO ticktoc. No youtube, no instagram. THose things will suck a kid in and keep them glued to video nonsense all day.

Im all for letting kids play video games. The shit they see on TV, youtube, ticktoc these days is far worse IMO.

I like your take on this. My kids are into youtube which has been a challenge but no social media/tic tok stuff.

As a 19 year old, keep them away from social media. Honestly Fortnite should be fine, as it isn't graphic.

I have 10yr old twins and they play all sorts of games on their phones, iPad, Nintendo Switch, but don't use their Oculus VR thingy. We have banned Tik Tok and all of the other social media sites too.

I think my son plays Fortnite, but I'm not sure as he and his sister are always using Roblox, or whatever the heck that game is.

Roblox is a big one. Then another one called Doors, or something? Social media is garbage. The kids are getting exposed to it though with all the stupid vids of it on youtube.

We eliminated fortnite for our 10 year old boy. Initially, he would go to his friend's house and play. He would come home and have an attitude that would generally last a day or so. We labeled it "game-raging." Once we identified it, our son began to take notice of his friend's behavior post-fortnite. Once we removed fortnite from the equation, the game-raging nearly went away. I am sure game-raging is there with other games, but for our son and our experience, it was clear as day.

If you think about it, games that are free make you the product. Especially socially interactive games. There is something about the dynamic of fortnite without excluding a few other titles, that puts our son and his buddy into a trance, removing them from reality.

We do not believe a 10-year old mind can grasp the concept of a game like fortnite.

Yes, we have a Switch, PS4, PS5, PSVR2, gaming PC etc. blah blah. At the same time, we do monitor and regulate our children's screentime and support reading, outdoor activities, and quality movies with an intro, middle, and an end. Studies show that social media like tiktok, youtube, and other nonsense-based time-wasters have no path of progress which leave you wanting more. Like empty calories, they are not good for you.

Chew on that...

I second this. Now a freshman in college, I’m pretty sure my parents held out on the shooter games for awhile due to the gore and such. Fortnite doesn’t have that but it causes tons of emotions for the kids. I’d say sports/racing games where you can’t talk to people online are valid for young ones. Some people online are seriously brutal in voice chats…

It is better to keep your children away from such games that have violence. You better let them play some games that help develop their mind. In my opinion, Minecraft is so much better choice than Fortnite.

fornite is known to be studied by psychologist so it can be the most addictive possible.

On long term I'm worried they wont find any fun in other stuff ; like board games, other nice video games, play outside, sport , wrenching, etc.

I still dont know what to do. ;

- on one side they told us if you avoid any screen for too long, they will jump in that like a junky.

- some said they will be use to do something else and leave the screen.

Anyway, 7 yo and they dont have any sort of screen yet (no pc, no tablet, no cellphone, no TV). They are with me in the garage or outside doing home stuff.

However, this winter we started to play mario kart on Yuzu and 4 remote, but my kids dont ask for it.
