Price check on E39 M5.

Looking at a 2000 Imola 89k miles and 2002 Grey 113k miles.

Both have good service and ownership history. The 2000 model has been a lightly used car and only added 500 miles since 2016.

The 2002 model has had the same owner for 16 years and always dealer maintained.

Both clean carfax’s.

The 2000 is around $42k and the 2002 is $36k.

I had a lemans blue E39 I sold years ago. Still regret it and looking to get one back.

The easy answer is buy both! Sorry to hear you sold the LeMans blue one. That is a fantastic color.

I’m a sucker for Imola Red, but the fact it has essentially been sitting for six years has me concerned it hasn’t gotten enough exercise to keep it healthy. How much has the grey one been driven during the past several years? Does it get out regularly during the year or is it a summer only car? It bodes well in my book that it has been serviced at the dealer.

Thank you both. I like Imola too, I had an E46 M3 in Imola.

The sitting issues are a concern for me too. Plus it still has the old 4:3 head unit.

The grey one has had only 2 owners. 2nd owner has had it 16 years and always dealer maintained. No vanos, rod bearings or chain guides done. Asking $38k with 113k miles. Seems high for the current slow down in used car prices.

That is high. Maybe at ~80k miles would be a bit easier to swallow. But I’d still prefer that car over the earlier one for the reasons already brought up. Another option is to buy an EAG car for top dollar. You pay up front but get a thoroughly vetted turnkey example with zero worries. I took this approach in 2015 and was very happy with the results.

Yep, that’s a proud owner. Sometimes I’ve postponed my purchases to get exactly what I want with great success. As winter has just started and the used car/collector car market seems to be cooling off I’m inclined to wait it out or negotiate for a better price. Do you have access to Hagerty price guides? Just another data point.

Solid advice. I haven’t purchased from them…yet…but a good friend has and I’ve seen many examples of their product in person and they are indeed first rate. The other beauty of dealing with them is that you know you have something you can sell back to them…which my friend did and he explained the whole transaction to me with actual amounts spent and received. It was very fair.

Love EAG and their “rejuvenation” process, but man you pay for it.

Some additional details on the grey car.
The seller ran a CARFAX and verified 2 owner car with 9 pages of dealer service history. However it also showed a minor damage report. Seller said it was a small rear bump. Bumper cover replaced.

Based on my research (Cars.com and BaT), I’d say somewhere in the low $30k’s would be in line. Maybe even high $20k’s.

I bought my EAG E39 M5 in 2015 for $31,900 - 58k miles, silver over black. Sounds dirt cheap now. $8k pre-sale work order to bring it up to snuff, all mechanical/maintenance, no accident or paintwork history. Kept it a year, decided I wanted to move on (I also had a ZHP coupe in the garage back then and found myself preferring it over the M5). Sold it back to Eric (RIP!) for a very fair price, and recycled it back into the EAG machine. Flew back to Cincy from Phoenix and drove it home. Eric (RIP!) handled the entire transaction and I spent most of an afternoon with him. Spectacular experience. With Eric now gone, brother Evan runs the show, haven't skipped a beat. They have their detractors who are mad because they buy up all the nice cars out there, then "overprice" them. Funny thing is, I've yet to find a detractor who's actually done business with them.

Great detail on a first hand transaction that backs up what I’ve been told. What a deal your E39 looks like now! I agree there is a huge difference in driving experience between the coupes and sedans and when you have both the four doors just sit unfortunately. Not that the M5 is a boring drive, just not as much fun for me.

Yep, I’d stick near those numbers. With those results being in the recent heady past and the market softening it’s best to get near there or lower.

I have a 2000 45k miles beautiful M5 in Imola red, three owner, I bought it from NV and it spent time in CA. Just had Vanos service done at dealer (big $), runs like new, not a squeak inside. Dinan exhaust, have stock. Heritage black interior, wheel redone less than a 1000 miles ago by Prince Wheel in NC, wrapped in Michelins. New OEM floor mats. New Eonon head unit just installed. Just inspected, had BMW do whatever it needed which was a couple suspension components. Recent other $3,500 maintenance done too (plugs and filters and such). Stack of dealer receipts. Upgraded OEM 01-03 headlights, have stock too. Car in incredibly nice. May sell if price is right. PM me if interested. Car in SE PA.

I had no idea Eric past away. He was the best. I talked with him a few times. Great BMW enthusiast.

Looks like a nice car. Likely more than I want to spend and I’d rather get an LCI model.

I floated $29-$30k to the 02’ seller, he didn’t seem interested at the price point.

Maybe check back with him in a couple of months. Sometimes these guys just need to hear it from a few people before reality sinks in.
