Lest We Forget

Norman Rubin John Tuckerman first soldier on the right is my grandfather a Regimental Sergeant Major & his brother William George Tuckerman second on the left. They were both gunners & went over in the first contingent from Canada.

People in general have no concept of what war is like.

They see it on tv and thats it. Trust me you don't want to be in it.

All those that fought and perished so we could be here, having coffe, chatting on this forum, drivng nice cars...they deserve alot more respect and honour than is given.

People have no idea how big your balls have to be to go to the front lines!

I sort of have two of these as there's ANZAC day as well. I agree they need remembering, people say it was a long time ago but jesus freaking christ imagine the fear and imagine the horror. Unthinkable.

Shout out for little Malta who bravely defended their tiny but crucial island, repelling wave after wave of ruthless bombardment and never flinching. This really messed up Nazi supply lines and had a huge knock-on effect in mainland europe.

My dad was a rifleman in an infantry company under General Patton during the closing months of the war. He had a German machine gun bullet put a crease in his helmet. He was sent back to England with dysentery and trench foot two weeks before the war ended.

I was drafted into the US Army in August, 1967 and served 2 years and 8 months of active duty. Spent my last 12 months in the 25th Infantry Division artillery - most of it near the Cambodian border, shooting at infiltrators coming across the border from the Ho Chi Minh Trail, most of it at night. I weighed 122 lbs. when I got home - a string bean at 5' 10".

And...

It appears that I'm the only one in our neighborhood flying the flag today.

So yeah, lest we forget...

All I see is commercial "Veteran's Day" sales pitches. Whoopee.

Solemn day and I pay all my respects to the ppl on the ground who fought and served and protected us. That's why I don't really like watching war movies. I know many will disagree but I don't like the glorifying aspect in some of them...war should be the absolutely last resort but it literally happens every day somewhere in the world. Like someone else said, it's nothing like in the movies and is probably like hell on earth.

"Lest we forget", but, unfortunately, we always do, constantly. As a collective race, we humans are doing it way wrong.

Peace (seriously).

A Poem

What Heroes Gave
by Roger Robicheau

Each donned their uniform to be
Defenders of our liberty

Their mission sure, their spirits bright
Guard freedom's home, be brave to fight

One final day each faced their call
Each gave their best enduring all

We'll never know what they went through
But know they loved this country true

Deep down inside we should all feel
What heroes gave, their cost so real

We must stay thankful, grateful of
The gift of freedom through their love

Their loved ones bore the gravest pain
What we can't know, some now sustain

To God I pray their pain will cease
And each will find long-lasting peace

Remember this from year to year
What heroes gave - shan't disappear

We'll never let their special day
Their time for honor slip away

These brave fought for a nation free
If not for them, where would we be?

Three of my great uncle's were killed in the pacific theater and one survived the Bataan death march. My father served in Korea and Vietnam.

The price of freedom is very high.

We owe a lot for our comfortable lives.

Dad was in the Korean War. My sister was part of the first group of female Marines to get stationed at Gitmo (TS sig-intel). Her son is now retired from the Army with 20 years of service and 10 combat tours as an EOD tech and then 1st SGT. Bronze Star recipient. And then there's me. Just a simple recon section leader. Me and some of my crew from my last tour of duty.

Oldest son (USNA '17) is active duty C-130J pilot for the US Marines. So, not quite a veteran yet. His grandfather (USNA '57) was in the Navy for 15 years. No war service, but a lot of great stories. Pic is from the day he completed basic qual before heading to his squadron in '20 and he just passed his aircraft commander check ride last week. Pretty amazing to me that they had the keys to a $100 Million aircraft to a 27 year-old.

BTW, the annual Marine Ball, which celebrates the founding of the Service on November 10, 1775, is Saturday night, world-wide. You may see well-dressed Marines and their dates out and about. Be sure to give 'em a "Bravo Zulu".

Thank you for articulating the horror of war and making me feel better for not being the only one who doesn't watch war movies (especially the more recent ones).
I know what combat is like, and I would do it again if necessary, but for the same reason I've done over the past, 18 years, for the guys on me Left and right, and those who recognize the sacrifice and bravery that come with the service.

^^^ 52 years later and I still keep in touch with my old Army buddies. We shared something special. We often didn't like it, but we did it together.
