2016 X1 Tire questions
I need help with choosing tires for my car - (let me say that I am not good with cars) I have 30K miles on my car.
My dealership told me I have to change my front tires as the thread is near 2/32 depth but my back tires are more than 7/32 on thread depth. The tires are the original pirelli 225/50 R18 95V All season Run Flat tires. I would like to transition to non run flat tires... but I am not sure how to go about it since my back tires do not need to be changed... Also, does this mean I need to get a spare flat tire? I can't remember if the car came with it.. Thanks for reading and your help! Last edited by bimmie4373; 06-16-2019 at 06:58 PM.. |

You don't have many choices. You can't mix rft and non-rft tires, else vehicle driving imbalance. You can buy two new rfts or 4 new non-rfts. I would go for the latter since the two good remaining rfts will wear soon.

All X1 that have RFT, do not have a spare tire/jack, as far as I know. Thus, if you are planning to get non-RFT, you either need to obtain a spare tire with jack, or invest in a Fix-a-Tire can, at the very least.

Changed our 2016 BMW X1 from Pirelli RFT to Michelin AS/3s and have not looked back. Do not have a spare tire but do have the tire repair and leak kit. The ride is noticeably better.

I just replaced my P7 RFTs with P7 non RFTs. The difference is not subtle. Its like an entirely different car. MUCH less road noise, darting and bumps both large and small are considerably muted. Highly recommended.

I went with Toyo UHP and purchased 4 new 19" Rims with a lower profile for better handling. I did not purchase run flats. In my entire life of driving I've had 5 flat tires. 2 were due to road conditions, 1 was due to the fact that the tires were too bald and 1 was my fault for hitting a curb while parking which also damaged the rim. The other was a blow out in the mid eighties due to the crappy car. So I purchased a can of tire fix. Now you don't need to purchase run flats which are more expensive but you can purchase tires with rim protectors which have strong side walls allowing you to drive off to the side without damaging the rims. I don't like run flats as I find that they don't handle well, they're also noisy and cost more. Plus in the winter here in Montreal, Quebec the law requires 4 winter tires. So I use the 18" wheel as the winter rim that's why I purchased 4 new wheels. If you don't plan on buying winter tires then go with Firestone, General Tire, Michelin or Toyo.
