Garage door lock ideas
So, I'm looking at boosting up the security on the garage door,
now the garage is attached (i.e. under my bedroom, which is on the first floor) and no access from inside the house. Not sure what it is actually called, "an up and over" "roller" "There are panels which slot in and go up a rail" I understand that anything can be defeated, but something a bit more than a standard lock PICS below Last edited by jaye944; 09-13-2018 at 09:31 AM.. |

no it isn't, it was when wife first had it, and the contractor was also talking to her about having an alarm installed.
I was thinking of camera's actually, after a couple of incidents. But there's nothing like physical security, from what I understand (from an person I knew - many years ago, whose employ was relieving people of there property) That protecting (in this case cars) would not deter him, IF he really wanted it, but given 2 similar cars but one had visible security, he would go after the car with none. You'd slow them down, and some people don't want the hassle, chance of getting caught. I'm not sure video, is a good deterrent (if youtube is anything to go by), so I just wanna show, that, there is something a bit better than a teeny tiny generic lock but good point |

We have a POE camera on the outside and inside the garage as well as a z-wave motion sensor (temp, humidity, lux and UV). The garage also has a sensor hardwired to the alarm panel but is treated as a vent zone (so not to trigger an alarm). Since the sensor is wired to the alarm panel we use our home automation to track/react to opening and closing events.

I def think that home security and cameras are a good idea. At the moment, I'm looking at beefing up physical security. I think any security expert would advice as a good course.
Also of course even a dummy camera with signs is a good deterrent. I don't hold any faith that having video/pics will get anything back. But yes it is a good idea, but please for this thread, I need some ideas, products etc, to beef UP my garage door setup initially txs I do appreciate all the input |

Pretty impressive you can fit 2 BMWs and a Ford Raptor in that 2 stall garage!

This is another option and you can do from the outside.

First step would be replacing the cable-flapper lock with something that uses steel bars going through those square holes in the track; and a motion light outside. Beyond that, with no other exit you need to get creative- to me, best bet would be an electronically operated deadbolt inside (either on a remote, or a covert/locking switch). We used to have our opener wired to 2 nails so that you closed the circuit by putting s/t metal across them - unless you knew what it was, it was just 2 nail heads in the trim (wiring was all inside). Padlocks or other external locks are fairly easy to knock off (and big expensive locks always say 'expensive stuff inside' to thieves).

Back on topic: my garage doors have metal rods that slide into the track. You can put a padlock on the rod, making it impossible for the doors to be opened unless you can remove the padlock.
What are you worried about? People getting into the garage, and then having entry into the house? Yours cars being stolen? Bikes? Tools? |

and yes it's a valid question, I guess, it was originally in winter to park up a car. We also use it to store temp stuff, when I DJ, after a night (not often) I park up, unload into the garage, and then in the morning take it all downstairs into the basement I'm also guessing tools, it's part of my garage project, so my repertoire of newly acquired, tools and tool kits, power tools, also looking at putting some AV into it, with a PC, to wifi, so I can google up when I work, to a TV overhead. Not in the 1000's, as most of the work is time. But I guess I'm trying to stop opportunistic folks as well |
