Xbox one question
OK so I grew up playing an Atari so bear with me. My boys have an Xbox one and they play fortnight. They say that it is "laggy" and there is a Wi-Fi booster I can get for it to correct this. Is there any credibility to their story?

If the internet connection is slow then yes that can cause lag in online games. If they really want the best connection, have them crawl through the attic with an ethernet cable and hardwire it to your modem.

Go to Speedtest.net and see what your download speeds are.
I assume their Xbox is on a wireless connection, so try testing it on a phone/laptop from whatever room the Xbox is in |

There are two issues to contend with, latency and bandwidth. You’d be surprised how little dedicated bandwidth you need. It’s the latency that needs to be as low as possible. You should test your ISP’s latency against Google and OpenDNS. I use OpenDNS for the security and lowest latency. I was able to cut latency by 20msec by switching from Google to OpenDNS. Latency is the amount of time it takes to resolve an address before you even start downloading data.
As for your wireless connection, you should make sure you are putting them on the 5ghz segment since it’s faster, provided they are close enough to the router. You could also get an AP between the router or a wireless extender that plugs into your power outlets. |

After having the geek squad come and diagnose our setup the range extender we bought was useless with our shitty ass bandwith. Might wanna upgrade that first.

Instead of a wifi range extender I would get something similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-PowerL...70_&dpSrc=srch
You won't get nearly the advertised Mbps but it will be a way more reliable connection with lower latency. Just make sure to plug both devices, at your modem and xbox, directly into the wall. (don't use a power strip as it will degrade your signal) |
