......”Born in Emporia, Kansas in 1944 as Ronald Lee Ermey, he grew up as a bit of a hell-raiser. Having been arrested for criminal mischief twice by age 17, he was given a choice of jail time or the military. He chose the Marine Corps. and served as a drill instructor in San Diego in the mid 1960s. He was eventually sent to Vietnam and served 14 months in that country. He was later a staff sergeant in Okinawa, but was medically discharged in 1972 because of injuries during his service. He later received an honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant by the Marines.”

Wow, I remember watching Mail Call back in the day and was just watching the Military History Channel this morning when a Mail Call snippet came up and I ended up on his Wikipedia page to read up on what he's been up to, where it showed that he was still alive.
Who would've thought, the next time I refreshed that page, he would be deceased... "Ronald Lee Ermey (born March 24, 1944) is an American actor and voice actor. Ermey is known for playing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He is a former United States Marine Corps staff sergeant and an honorary gunnery sergeant; during his tenure in the U.S. Marine Corps, he served as a drill instructor." "Ronald Lee Ermey (March 24, 1944 – April 15, 2018) was an American actor and voice actor. He achieved fame when he played Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was a former United States Marine Corps staff sergeant and an honorary gunnery sergeant; during his tenure in the U.S. Marine Corps he served as a drill instructor." RIP R. Lee Ermey

Because I'm too heavy? Because you are a disgusting fatbody!
When you two turds are done, I want you to go clean the head. I want that head so sanitary and squared away the Virgin Mary herself would be proud to go in there and take a dump.

Sad to hear. Full Metal Jacket was an eye opener to an 11 year old boy, but my friends and I quoted much of his lines from that movie. From Full Metal Jacket, The Frighteners and Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Toy Story and Saving Silverman, his voice and personality fit so perfectly into so many roles. Used to really enjoy Mail Call with my 2 boys on Sunday mornings. R.I.P Gunny.....R.I.P.

He was made for the FMJ role. No script. They just told him, "Action" and the rest is history. In his honor:

My dad used to work overnights when I was a kid and FMJ was his choice of movie to let his 6 and 4 year old kids watch as a babysitter if he dosed off on the couch...to this day I can't tell if he was negligent or the best father ever...

What are the chances that a script containing a character called "Private Snowball" would ever get sold to Hollywood producers today?
