Why do some BMW paint colors have “II” in the name?

I have seen, for lack of a better word, "variants" of the original color noted on several occasions. However, I never completely understood what they meant.

Take, for example, Frozen Dark Blue II. I mean Frozen Dark Blue is Brozen Dark Blue. Perhaps they are using a different type of paint material? Could anyone elaborate on these paints?

Imola Red II, Dakar Yellow II, Alpine White II, to name a few.

I think some of these are when there is a change to a paint formulation for some reason, but the color doesn't actually change to the human eye. I have no evidence for that statement, however.

This is correct to my knowledge.

Original Estoril Blue from back in the day had certain ingredients in that are no longer allowed in EU or other production. This EB II ie 2 was born in a more environmentally friendly way...although sadly a softer finish and all cars chip much easier now.

I think that happened with Sakhir Orange, too.

They ran out of the flakes that go into the paint and had to change the formulation.

It still looks the same, though.

The original Dakar Yellow was a single component system without clearcoat. Dakar Yellow II had a clearcoat.
