I spent 13 years daily driving a car I’ve pulled apart and put together more times than I care to imagine. 5 engine rebuilds, 4 autos before I converted it to manual ... nearly every nut and bolt painfully removed and put back through the course of its life. It was a hobby/passion/release.
Yet I am still here to tell the tale. Amazing.
I work in IT, but I don’t find automobiles a mystery.

Just cause he can do something you can’t, doesn’t mean you need to have a baseless swipe.

I rarely watch YouTube videos and even more rarely from start to finish. But this one had me hooked.

Agree that it would be interesting to put a $$$ figure on the labor just to have some basis for comparison to buying a working example from the start. It's great that it's his hobby, but it does make a non-hobbyist curious about the total investment. That aside, as with most projects like this, usually the costs in emotional energy are underestimated by a non-hobbyist, making the whole affair more challenging than it might seem at first.

But I like this guy for not sugar coating things, even the fact that his wife is a guinea pig for the road-worthiness of the car, and I gotta give props to anyone who can see a big project like this through to the end.

Silly me. I forgot that hobbyists are better at this stuff than trained engineers.

The trained engineers' work is all there, silly. He just did monkey-stuff and more or less bolted things together, with hundreds of hours of details. Check the videos and you'll probably just get really offended that someone has the education, good judgement, and work ethic to complete a project like this. What other basis could there POSSIBLY be to question the safety of this project? Make sure you pop into every DIY / mechanical / maintenance thread on this forum to warn the posters about how UNSAFE it is for them to take things apart and reassemble them!

Inexpensive would be a better word, even tho this guy's time could clearly be worth some serious money. Tell me who is getting a $6K tesla and MAKING money off it while ending up with a drivable car? The kind of person ABLE to do that in the first place is about the last person you should be worrying about. Try worrying about yourself, and take your disapproval to some cause where it can actually do some good.

Glad to know there are tesla DIYers out there. This guy is the ultimate diyer. No need to pay tesla for maintenance. You guys should also check out the tesla racing channel and drag times on YouTube. The kid on tesla racing channel has a gutted p100d with racing slicks that he enters drag racing competitions with. Drag times has some awesome vids though they don't modify the car much other than maybe aftermarket rims and tires that are lighter than stock.
