The reason for inconel is high temp rating, no corrosion at the welds (welded 304SST can and will rust unless you heat treat it, and even then 304SST is the shitiest SST out there), and as it heats and cools it creates cool blue green colors to the metal so there is a gee whiz factor to it. The inconel is the most superior metal you can use, hands down. Nothing will be close in tems of strength/corrosion/weldabilty. Is it expensive, yes, probably the most expensive metal out there next to Ti. Ti alloy would be light but useless in terms of strength. It would need signicant cold work to equal the strength of the Inconel. Again the weight savings might be significant but alot of money to just save weight. |
