Windows 10 updates?!?!?!?!

Has anybody else had a problem with long update times on their computer, particularly laptops, with windows 10? It seems like every 10 days or two weeks, I get to work and turn my computer on, and then have to wait 15 or 20 minutes for updates to complete uploading. And today is the worst, I'm at 40 minutes right now and it's only 18% complete!!!

It depends somewhat on the speed of your computer and the complexity of the update. I'd say 40 minutes is very rare, I do not recall that. 5 to 10 minutes is more common, which is very irritating when I am ready to go home and I am being delayed by updates, or arrive to work and an update has to go in, or I am in the middle of a complex spreadsheet and an update notice comes in.

I do take advantage of postponing the update until I go to lunch or as I am packing up to leave. I have left the computer on and the monitor off at times when I was ready to go and the update was still going. My laptop at work has a docking station with a monitor and also a screen lock out after 15 minutes or so.

I've had the same long update time on my laptop running Win10 when I ran the update a couple of days ago.

There is a possible fix and if your company is decently sized, I'd be surprised if they're not doing this already. The fix I've seen with slow update times is to move the update source local; meaning set up a WSUS server. Because I'm a nerd, I had set up a WSUS server as a VM on my home network. I have some of my Windows servers pointed to the WSUS server now and the updates are lightening quick. Updates of a few hundred MBs are completed in a few minutes.

I haven't pointed my Win10 laptop to the WSUS server yet because I don't want to join it to my domain controller. I found some instructions on hacking the registry to get it to get updates from my WSUS server but have been lazy about doing it.

I run a small business, no tech-support. I'm two hours now into this update. I think you can see the steam coming out of my ears at this point. I also believe I'll be going back to Windows 7 ASAP.

You auto update a work computer?
Most places lock down the workstations.

How old is your computer? Definitely part of the strategy of MS is to continue improving the OS, which is taxing to older computers. They are not going to support Windows 7 much longer.

Maybe it is time to upgrade, which is what I did with my home laptop. At work, they still use Windows 7, but are phasing in Windows 10 as new equipment comes on stream. My Gigabyte P35 v6 from Amazon is amazingly faster than my old Dell XPS 1530.

I went back to Windows 8.1 on my 5 laptops (private and for work)
Since I have no problems anymore..I'll stick with 8.1 for sure .

8.1 works still perfect for me , so why not stick with 8.1 ?

Im sticking with my approved W7 Ultimate and be pleased with it. Stay away with W10 sh*t and come back, if this OS is more customer orientated developed.

I was a hardcore Windows 7 Pro, and it's still an incredibly stable OS, but Win 10 Pro has been bulletproof for me. I have recent machines, and updates never take more than just a few minutes.

And I agree with the above posters: Windows 8.1 was a poor OS. Couldn't wait to get rid of it.

For those that don't want to have Microsoft tell you when to update, here's a tip I was able to use with success. I didn't want Win10 to automatically download and install updates whenever it felt like it. Then force me to reboot. So I found out, all you have to do to prevent this behavior is to change your network connection you're using into a metered connection. What a metered connection means to Microsoft is the connection you're using is over some circuit which charges per MB/GB what have you. Obviously, Microsoft didn't want a bunch of angry customers saying Microsoft is costing people money by forcing them to do updates over a connection which charges on the amount of bandwidth you consume.

I've been running in this configuration for months now with no issues. I don't even have to change the wireless NIC I'm using in my laptop to a regular connection type to do updates. When I'm ready, I just go into Windows Update and do a manual update.

I just got a new laptop with Windows 10 and holy crap the initial updates have taken hours. This is a pretty decent laptop (i7-7820HK, GTX 1070, 16 GB DDR4 RAM) with Windows running off of an SSD and these updates are terribly slow.

The laptop had to restart twice for updates (after taking forever to download/prep both times) and the third time started about an hour before bed. I checked the laptop a little after restarting and it was at 32%. Seemed ok, get up to use the bathroom at 3AM and it's still stuck at 32%

I first booted this laptop at 11am yesterday and spent all afternoon downloading and installing updates

I don't understand why this is taking so long. It doesn't help Windows treats you like a dumb dumb with the updates, not giving the file size or download speed, just a vague percentage

Hopefully updates after this initial batch download/install a little smoother.

Also, beware: A recent Win10 update has broken DHCP for some laptops/Surface tablets. There's a new patch out to fix that, but unfortunately, sometimes you have to download updates then check for updates and then install updates that update the ones you just installed. Gotta love MS

But you neglected to mention the updates that must be downloaded and installed to fix the updates that had been installed to fix the updates that had to be installed to fix the updates, which were, in turn, installed to fix the previous updates. It's a thing.
