VW GTI or 4-dr Mini Cooper S

Thinking about adding a hot hatch to my garage. Which would you prefer?

For me, it'd be the GTI. More usable and the first hot hatch.

The Mini's are getting nicer inside but Mk7 GTI all day. Mostly personal preference anyway. Tune only Mk7's are making 280-290 on pump though.

Pretty damn good for the size IMO.

You're damn right. I just looked it up and APR recorded their tune only car doing the 1/4 in 13.2 @ 110, 13.3 sec 60-130.. that's biting the heels of most tune only N54/55s

I'd at least wait until some reviews of the updated 2015 Focus ST come out. New steering, new suspension, new interior, new exterior, etc. If they apply some of what they learned with the Fiesta ST chassis it should be a blast to drive.

Yeah those fiesta sts put in work at the autocross course. It's crazy how quick they are

Wait ~6 more months for the Golf VII R. Thinking it'll be well worth the price variance vs. a GTI with PP.

Prepare to really wait for the GTD. Still no word on when it will arrive, if at all. R's have been delayed a few times already and keep losing features compared to the Euro model. VW USA is the worst run outfit.

GTI all day long. I just picked up a CC DSG with the same motor and added 67hp and 95tq with tune and intake. VWs are great cars for the money. My GTI was the best all around car I've ever owned. My wife is still mad at me for selling it.

New Golf GTIs are one of, if not the best, all round cars in the world.
Practical, refined, fun, relatively economical, reliable.

But you could easily talk yourself into the 4wd Golf R; by all accounts it is superb

I had a chance to drive a Mk7 GTI (DSG, no power/performance pack). It was a great all-rounder, but it really wasn't that fun. Decent straightline thrust but the FWD limitations are always present if you're used to a RWD platform. I remember feeling more impressed with the Mk6's interior materials relative to its competition when it first came out. The huge expanse of shiny plastic framing the Mk7's IP feels very un-GTI-like, and it's a very flat dash design with an odd connecting joint at the base where the IP and console meet.

I think it photographs way better than it looks IRL.

The Mini has an edge in the chassis dept, IMO, but the GTI will be the better all around performer because of it's power advantage. The last GTI I owned was a MkV, and I still miss that car. Yes, it's FWD, so when you approach the limit, you get push, but the GTI has a nice "darty" feel to it (so does the Mini Cooper).

You definitely need to drive them both, because they feel different. The Mini has really sharp turn-in, which gives it the edge in handling, IMO, but you really have to drive them to feel the difference. If you're shopping hot hatches, either car will put a smile on your face. Remember, you don't have need to look for the "best", you need to look for what makes you happiest.

My Mini GP is a go kart and pretty lightweight but the GTI would probably be the better off-the-line performer.
