Pictures from Chicago MB "C-Drive"
MB is highlighting the new C Class before it hits the dealers and I wanted to compare it to my 335 coupe.
Nice event for the most part, the "drive" was kind of a joke, though. We drove maybe 20 blocks round trip through the loop and west loop stopping at almost every light. There wasn't much opportunity to test the performance of this car - stop and go city driving - *yawn* I did an audi event last year in the south loop where I used to live and they took you by shuttle to the parking lot at solider field where they had an autocross course set up - you could drive any non-S car, and they had pro drivers take you 1 lap in the RS4. From a luxury/safety standpoint I was very impressed - the nav, iPod integration, HK audio system, MB finishes - all standard. AMG styling on the C350 sport was a very nice touch, aesthetically it will not differ much if they do create a real AMG version. The shift knob was plastic, though, with a dull finish and easily scratched. The real disappointment came in the power/performance arena. Granted, they only had automatics and all we did was city driving, but it felt heavy and clumsy compared to my 335 coupe. I even turned off the A/C so as to not rob the engine of any power - throttle response was sluggish at best. Even when I drove in sportronic mode (or whatever MB calls their version) there was still a delay in throttle response, and I hardly got the thrill I get when I drive my 6spd 335. I know this is not an AMG so performance is not the primary focus but at a price point starting just shy of $38k the 335 is a much better value IMO, but I guess it all just depends on what you are looking for - luxury or performance. It still is a great car for the entry-level luxury car segment, but it is no BMW

Thanks for the review.
I drove by that event...the driving part anyway (near the train station?). Funny, I felt like more people were checking out my car than the MB's on the lot. Could be the sound of the exhaust in 2nd gear as it echoed off the surrounding buildings...or the fact I was speeding. I didn't notice too many new C's on the road though and I was out downtown all day. BTW, I was at the Audi event last year and it was great. They have another coming to Chicago in October. Don't have the date handy. I think they have a paid/non-paid version, where the paid gets to drive the S and RS cars.

I am getting my Mom a new car...the C Class is at the very top of my list. I wouldn't mind driving that around when I'm in town visiting the parents.

I was at the same event on sunday. There is no reason for me to buy this car. The exterior styling is superb. The paint job on the car is excellent. They get an anthracite headliner for the sport. But,
The car was sluggish. The steering was delayed. No sport seats or sport steering wheel. Too much of a delay even in sport mode and traction limited. The I-drive system works the same and is easy to use. It has a little more room than a 3 series, but less trunk space. I feel like Lexus has a big competitor here and BMW doesnt. It really does come down to if you want performance or luxury. This would be a great car for my girlfriend. |

I think they look hideous, especially the front. The 3-series is so much nicer.
