Chevy Suburban or Land Rover LR 4

So my family is in a bit of a pickle now...
We have a 2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali with 150000 miles on the tachometer. The car is 10 years old and has been giving us some trouble lately. It has been a GREAT car to me and my family, it took me to pre school and it got me and my family out of the vast amount of snow in Nj!!

But now the time has come, we need a new family car. My mom wants to stick with the Suburban because she knows the limits of the car (very similar to the Denali). But my dad wants a luxury 4X4 the Land Rover LR4. My parents are looking at me for our next major purchase because I am the car guy in the family. I want your feedback and help on what car my family should purchase.

Also feel free to give me options as to cars if you have them

They will just need...
At least 7 seats
4WD
Under $65,000

Thanks guys I need your help fast!!
Shane

Hi Shane. I would most certainly pic the suburban over the LR4. The suburban is very spacious for 7 passengers, especially when compared to the LR4. The LR is also not as reliable. I dont trust anything made in england. very unreliable(from LR experience). Stick with what works. get the suburban.

That's what I thought, honestly I like the looks of the suburban and the kicker is they use basically the same amounts of fuel, if anything the LR uses premium fuel and that is just more money being wasted.

You also got the others in that category such as the Tahoe and expedition. I'd put those 3 up against each other. Especially in buying one of them to use against each other with the salesman. I wouldn't really put the land rover in there.

My moms mechanic (doesn't work for GM) said that she at all cost should avoid the expodition. But she does want to go GM.

Why should the LR be out of the race? Just Curious

63K for a Suburban! Didn't even know they went that high. Might as well get the Denali XL with the 6.2L at that point.

$63k is chump change for a car in this day and age. It's (middle) middle class territory. Great for people with $500k-$1M liquid net worth and around a $150k-$175k/year income.

IIRC a well-equipped Toyota Sequoia runs in the $60k range as well.

Yep. It's hard to really appreciate the effects of inflation when you just see incremental increases (1-3%) year after year, but damn it's really an eye opener when you look at some of the MSRPs for "commonplace" vehicles.

Just checking edmunds.com right now, I'm looking at a Honda Odyssey "Touring elite" version (well-equipped, I presume). Just off hand, what would you guys guess the MSRP to be of a Honda Odyssey?

Before looking, I guessed it would be around the $30k mark. I mean it's a prototypical "family car."

MSRP: $43,825

Nearly $45k for a fucking Odyssey! It's insane.

Granted, I chose the most expensive trim (touring elite), but it's still eye opening nonetheless.

Seriously,
In think back in 06 my friend got a brand new Odyessy touring and only paid $32,000. Back in 02 the XL Denali was only $53,000+ taxes and fees. Now they can fetch up to $65,000+taxes and fees!!!!!!
It's ludacris!!!

My moms mechanic said to stay away from the 6.2, he said with all of the components in the engine being complex, it is a NIGHTMARE to fix and the same goes for the bill being a NIGHTMARE

The 5.3 feels really underpowered in the Suburban. I drive one every year in Park City. If where you live is pretty hilly I'd try to get in to a 2012 Escalade or Denali.

What about a Q7 or Lexus LX/ land cruiser?

They have the luxury your dad wants and the capabilities of an SUV. I personally would go for either the Lexus or Toyota as they are probably more reliable than the Audi

The Lexus LX? That's way the fuck out of his price range. A base LX MSRP (no options) starts at $80,930 (edmunds).

Start adding options and you get well into the $90s.

IMO if you had to go japanse, one car that always seems to be under the radar is the Infiniti FX50.

Base FX50 starts at $59k. With options, it might be possible to stay under the $66k limit.

The FX50 gets 0 to 60 in 5 flat IIRC. That's extremely impressive for an SUV. The car definitely has some balls.
