What is going on w all these spam threads?

Have you guys noticed this site is being flooded w threads showing stuff like this:

I don't get the spammer's pt, nobody can read anything since it's just unintelligible gibberish, so what is their goal here? Are they hoping someone will inadvertently click a hidden link or something?

SEO. Those posts are trying to influence their search rankings in Google and other search engines, not meant to be read by people or actually sell an item to forum members.....

Search engines like Google consider the number of web sites that a link appears on as one of their factors in ranking search results. If you want your lame product/service to appear on page one of a search and not page 872, you need to try and skew the search results. Hence, posting all over the place in web forums like this, that are running old and probably obsolete software that's easy to spam with readily-available tools.

The spam posts last night were all using an international character set, probably trying to skew the search results in a specific country for Epson printers or ink/toner cartridges.....
