Home security ideas

Has anyone installed their own video based home security system? I'm not sure what system to buy...any recommendations would be appreciated.

I installed an 8-channel NVR system after a break in. It's made by Annke, which is rebranded Hikvision but with a local presence in Socal. It has been very reliable and has all the features I wanted. My advice would be to choose a POE system and avoid the retail brands at big box stores. You want something that's made by Hikvision or Dahua, who makes the vast majority of the cameras and systems out there.

I suggest you do your research, there is no one size fits all, it also depends on what you want to spend.

As you go into the higher end of things, it starts to get complicated and setup is not plug and play. My Hikvision NVR and cameras were not easy to setup, and is no silver bullet, takes a bit of fiddling around.

I'm thinking it would be fun to have cameras that switch a spotlight on when they pick up motion. The light would follow the source of movement. Maybe add a voice saying "smile! smile!"

Let me guess, being that you are in the general Sea-Tac area, you too have an illegal homeless tent city (or RV) full of heroin addicts posted up within a block of your house and are now considering home security and monitoring? Yeah, me too....

I'm currently looking at this unit: https://us.ezvizlife.com/item/Everyday-1080p/257.html

Simple, inexpensive, wired monitoring with smart phone monitoring and alerts. I'm not quite to the point of wanting window sensors, motion detectors, and alarm center monitoring. I think an upgrade from my current Nest cam to multiple hard wired cameras is a good first step.

That's an analog system and although inexpensive, it's limited to 1080p. You will want higher resolution if you want to see a license plate 20 feet away. Invest in an IP system if you need the capability to go higher resolution, and especially if you are doing a fresh cable run.

Thanks for the tip! They have a POE system that does 4MP. Price jumps but is still not too bad: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y1DNBSY/ref=emc_b_5_t?th=1

Nope. Not on the ground. Too easy to take out. High on the corners of the house and tied together with a wee bit of software will do just fine.

How about a paint gun. Easy to place and once it does it's job much easier to see.
