That may be the case today, but don’t think that BMW will “improve” the materials quality just because their platform costs lessen over time. As long as their sales keep going up, they won’t change anything, they will just keep the extra profit. Only losing sales or the increased competition (which you mentioned) will cause them to spend more money.

Think of all the complaints on the ugly noses/grilles many of us (and the media) have been complaining about for years. Notice BMW hasn’t really changed direction on that. The reason: their sales keep rising every year so they must be doing something right. If we all put our money where our mouths are and actually stopped buying these ugly-nosed cars (causing a sales drop), BMW would change their designs within a year or so. Though it would take more than just the Bimmerpost enthusiasts to make a significant dent in sales.
