Ah, got it.

You could take it to a Rolex AD and they should be able to open it up and check the movement along with removal of the band to check the serial number a series number.
However, they won't be able to contact Rolex to check the legitimacy. The only way you can do that is if you send it to Rolex for service. Then it will be checked to see if it's legitimate and if it's stolen. If either of those cases are true, you'll never see your watch again.

It's weird, it's the only way to verify a Rolex. It seems like they could charge you a fee to verify your watch prior to purchase.
